I just ran across this on another board. Seems like a great idea. I think I will participate.

Huh. Only guitar strings. I'd have sent him some old packs of new-in-box bass strings that don't meet my needs along with my takeoffs...

The intention here is great, but I am having trouble picturing how this would work. I cut the ends of my strings off when changing them so that I don't have to force the part of the string that was wound around the tuner through the guitar body, possibly scratching it. This leaves a string that is too short to use again, at least on a guitar that is the same size as mine.

I think he would be better off looking for donations of string sets like Rusty said. I'll bet there are lots of sets sitting around people's houses that the player has decided they like some other string better but didn't use all the sets of the old favorites. I doubt the guy would turn down a new set of strings, but maybe if the website said it, people would think about it more. I didn't think about it unitl Rusty posted that...
