The Hornsby Jack Straw

Driving a couple days ago and on the Dead Channel on XM comes the Bruce version of Jack Straw from Deadicated. I don't think I've heard that cut in probably 15 or so years and man it was absolutely rocking. Totally changed the outlook of my day from moderately stressed to unbelievably stoked.

Kind of struck me as one of the better studio cuts of any GD material I've ever heard, if not the next best thing to Terrapin Station. Thanks Bruce. If you haven't listened to that one in a while, give it a whirl.

Side note is that I was just coming back this morning from dropping my cat off at the groomers and I caught a live Jimmy Buffet version of Scarlet Begonias. Awesome arrangement and totally set me straight for an awesome Saturday. I had no clue he had it in his bag.

I saw Jimmy Buffet in Las Vegas a couple of years ago and he opened the show with Scarlet Begonias. It was a big surprise to me and really set the tone for the rest of the night.

Love Hornsby's version of JS. There are several tunes on that album that I dug. Never knew Buffett covered Dead tunes 8)

I never heard of him til Buckeye '88 when he sat in with the Dead on accordion. Sugaree I believe. Pretty cool. The guy next to me kept saying he was the " Hendrix of accordion " .....
:?:
I have always wondered "WHAT IF" he had joined the Dead after Brent died. For me it seemed the initial new guy buzz wore off real quick with Vince.
I never thought Jerry had any good connection with him and I think along with drugs it lead to a disinterested Jerry ....
:D

Haha. I did a double take myself there.

Cat managed to survive.

He did join the band for a while. I saw some of the shows. I (perhaps mistakenly) thought that Jerry and Bruce got along well and that's why Jerry played on at least one of Bruce's albums.

I meant with Vince there was no connection ; Jerry intro'd Hornsby by saying " Id like to bring out a good friend of mine ... " ...

Any video I've seen of Hornsby shows always seemed to indicate that Jerry and Bruce really fed off one another. I think Bruce upped the ante. Kept Jerry interested and really pushed him.

Hornsby also happened to be my very first concert.
