Grateful Dead Music Forum

Here's a new one (at least I don't recall it ever being asked before).

I'm in the midst of preparing posters for my Dead project band's upcoming gig and would like to do up our name in a font reminiscent of the Dead. A simple "Grateful Dead fonts" Google search turned up a few options but nothing that blows me away.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Perhaps like the top line on the Dead's own web page:

If I can't find anything better, I guess I'll go with:

I went through the exact same thing a couple of years ago and I wish I could remember any of the places I got our fonts from. I downloaded one that was called Butterfield and another called Hendrix. Both are pretty sweet and we've used em plenty. I'll dig em up and put up examples when I get a minute.

I should know this, but how the heck do you get your system (PC) to recognize a dlownloaded font?

Ok... for a PC running XP:

To add a new font to your computer
Open Fonts in Control Panel.
On the File menu, click Install New Font.
In Drives, click the drive you want.
In Folders, double-click the folder that contains the fonts you want to add.

In List of fonts, click the font you want to add, and then click OK.
To add all of the listed fonts, click Select All, and then click OK.

Notes

To open Fonts, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Appearance and Themes. Under See Also, click Fonts.
To select more than one font to add, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each of the fonts you want to add.
You can also drag OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, and raster fonts from another location to add them to the Fonts folder. This works only if the font is not already in the Fonts folder.
To add fonts from a network drive without using disk space on your computer, make sure that the Copy fonts to Fonts folder check box, in the Add Fonts dialog box, is clear. This is available only when you install OpenType, TrueType, or raster fonts using the Install New Font option on the File menu.

Does adding the font to you operating system as you described automatically make it available to your word processing programs, too (Word, WordPerfect, etc.) or do you have to specially import the font into each program individually?

Been a while since I added fonts, but once its in your fonts folder, it should show up in all programs (Word, Excel, Photoshop). Thats how it worked on Window's '98

Yes, when you add them via the control panel, you're all set.

I notice that the "Hendrix" font is a trial version only good for 30 days, then you have to buy it, so use it fast, or be prepared to pay $18.00

Yeah they want you to pay for em on some sites, but I got both Hendrix and Butterfield for free. Like I said it was a couple of years ago and I can't remember exactly where I got them.

look for the "Bad Acid" font, it's very Rick "Griffin-ish".
Lalique is another old Apple font that looked good for hippie posters...
