Am I hearing D > C > "F major" (instead of G major) then they switch to the G ? And then they do it after one of the verses? Yay or nay?

You are hearing an F - At least the note - maybe not a true F major chord. Jerry and Phil hit the F - not sure what everyone else is doing though.

I do it twice with the F maj in the beginning but I've only done d-c-g-d between verses. Haven't really checked that closely to see if they were all voicing similarly.
