Thought about buying the special version with all the extras, almost got sold on the STICKERS, but opted for the 1 disc version. I've listened to it 4 or 5 times now. Most of my other Dylan is (a guess) the first 10 albums, Blood on the Tracks, and Time out of Mind, so I can't speak on Modern Times or any of that, but Together Through Life definitely stacks up. In some ways it feels like an artifact, but even where the arrangements are basic blues and "didn't that line come out of another Hunter song?", it is somehow fresh.
A line from the pre-release interview sums up the subject matters of the songs: "Hopes and fears go together like a comedy team." Shit has gone awry, but there ain't no bugs on me. Read the interview at Dylan's website. I especially like the part where he talks about songwriting, calls Jimmy Buffett his favorite writer. Makes me here a melody line or turn of phrase and wonder if it is Buffett's. "If you ever go to Houston / Dallas..."

I didn't "buy" it, but rather a friend gave it to me. I am enjoying it, for the most part. I have been a huge Dylan fan since the first time I heard him, roughly 35 years ago. I saw all those Dylan/Dead/Petty shows and then all the Dylan/Dead shows, had such high expectations and was kinda let down (cept for jerry playing pedal steel!) but I kept on seeing Dylan, even though I was mocking him openly, I was still at the shows. His band was too loud and disorganized, his electric playing was sub par and he mumbled words so that you couldn't tell what song he was playing. And then something happened in the '90's and he was at the top of his game again. His band kicked ass, he took things seriously and he was even shaking hands with the audiences. It was about when Time out of Mind came out, I took a shot and bought it. I would put it up there against some of his best. It has grown on me and I love it. I also liked Love and Theft, but it wasn't as good. Modern Times I thought was a bit off track, but Tell-Tale Signs, since it was old/new stuff is great. As for the new one, I'm giving it a chance. I like the paired down band, I like the accordian on it and I like some of the songs, but others seem like throwaways that he decided to put on for no reason. It's a short album, only 10 songs, yet it doesn't really feel cohesive. I'll let you know when I've listened to it further.
