Hello!

I'm a 22 year old guy from Sweden and I will be going to the US this or next year. I have a little sister that just went on a exchange high-school year to Rochester or something. I have just recently made two trips of six months each to south-east Asia, and want to try going west as I will be visiting my sister. I'm posting here because I like GD and most fans I've met have been cool.

I hope to stay in the country for at least a couple of months, I think three months is the longest you can stay on a regular tourist-visa. Should I go to CA? San Fransisco? I don't like to go around and take pictures, rather try to live in the place you're at and get to know some people.. I would love to see some affiliated/similar shows to GD, maybe do some tripping and meet a new girl. So when should I go, and where?

Good luck with coming to America - if you go to Cali make sure you visit Yosemite National park.
It will be worth it.

youre best bets are either cali or nyc, dark star orchestra tours on the west coast all the time, plus if youre looking to have a "good" time, thats the place to be. You could get a contact high walking around some parts of Cali!

But Phil also has that crazy tour going on in NY, so you could just go see a bunch of his shows in a row haha. On a second note, Atlanta is one of the coolest places Ive ever lived, theres always something to do there, and its the Mecca of business for all the southeast.

I would vote for San Fran. While NYC is a great experience and place in general I don't think you would get the overall GD feeling that you are looking for. Just a suggestion but ultimately the trip will be what you make of it. Have fun and enjoy.

Dude, you need to come to Boulder. Tons of great shows, heads, awesome people, best vibes out of anywhere. There's a bunch of rukinders living in Colorado, and its just getting to the most amazing weather.

I would only recommend NYC or SF if you have a LOT of spending money- two of the highest cost-of-living cities in the U.S.

My advice would partially depend on what season you plan to visit. Winter,Spring, Summer,Fall?

Colorado is a really fun place for heads, especially the Denver-Boulder-Ft Collins axis. Usually lots of cool shows, lots of heads, plus the Rocky Mountains for daytrips....and way more affordable than either NYC or SF. Awesome sunny summers but pretty harsh winters

Likewise, Oregon and Washington are incredibly scenic, relatively Deadhead-centric (especially Eugene), as well as having relatively low costs. Mild winters (on or near the coast anyway) compared to CO or Eastern US... the most perfect Summer seasons I have ever known. Not quite as much happening in the way of big shows: many national touring bands tend to hit SF, LA and/or Vegas and then head back east. Great regional and local music scenes though.

Speakin of Vegas... that could be fun if you have deep pockets!

I'd like to find some place where it's easy to go up to people and make friends. Also has to be some place where there is something going on.. a good thing might be to find place and the time when something like a music festival is going on and go then?

Such a big country, don't know anything about Atlanta and never heard of Boulder. Many of the cities are just too big to grasp, perhaps going to special parts of cities is a choice. I would like some smaller beach town if it's the right people, or is it much like the tv-show OC people? hot weather = smaller backpack you know.. is Canada fun?

And yes we have good women, but it works for guys too. Getting girls is often easy abroad. That being said I think it's both the blonde thing that people like about swe people, and also that we are overall very non-religious and free with the sex stuff.

Planning around a main event like a festival is a very good idea... those would mainly happen in the summertime. Arcata,CA is a nice beach town, very head-friendly, that hosts Humboldt State University- college girls! Based there you could plan side trips either down to San Fran or out to big festivals like High Sierra in the central CA mountains or Oregon Country Fair, near Eugene, OR.

Say $10-15k for the whole trip (3 months), would that get me far? It's nice you name some less famous but cheaper places, and also season is very important. I could go from place to place and if I visit Canada while going north it could become a longer trip..

I make my living and these trips by playing internet poker, so Vegas would be something to do. However I hate playing these days and it's only for money so maybe not..


edit: where is eugene? I think I want to start or finish the trip in the state of NY (that's where my sister is), but I feel that is messing things up. Goddamn country so big it's like flying across the globe when you want to get from one coast to the other.

edit again: i'm smoking hasch and watching the US show freaks and geeks haha.. I have to go visit my sisters high school, she just went on her first day at high school a few hours ago (though she will be senior). Maybe they will have hot girls in army jackets? Here's a quick thought, you could "base" yourself on the East Coast in Mid-June in Ashville N.C--(hippy mecca of the East Coast), or Pittsburgh, Morgantown, Cleveland---all fairly cheap--well maybe not Ashville, go to Bonnaroo in June, travel to NY and elsewhere after Bonnaroo, go to Allgood festival in Mid-july, then go out West, hit Vegas and hopefully make some money ( ) and then do some fun stuff on the West Coast...bottom line, if you want the "best" three months, I'd say you're going to have to wait til next June.

I'm sure this is a great idea, I just have to google all the festivals and towns since I hardly know them at all. Should probably visit sister in state of NY at spring break or when she graduates in end of June, which would kind of fit this tour.

Also stuff like hippie-mecca always sounds good to me.. as long as it's still fun and not just crawling with cops due to the reputation of the town (hello Pai, north Thailand).
