We posted our versions of GDTRFB and LOOSE LUCY from The Pittsburgh Blues Festival on our website, if you wanna check 'em out. Don't know if David (causebass) ever posted that, 'cause I was on vaca for a while.

We are joined on BOTH songs by Phil Brontz (Sax-MONSTER), Patti Spadaro (the louder of the 2 guitars, don't ask me why, but just so you know...) and of course, Andrea Pearl & Jill Simmons on the SICKLEBERRY harmonies (seriously - the backups on Loose Lucy are phat).

I'm happy to see you guys got a gig at the Thunderbird the 6th. I got a job in Slovakia and leave the 11th. Assuming people don't have anything planned for my last Saturday this side of the Atlantic, I'll see you then.

(By the way, I've been fiending for pizza at McGrogan's ever since I saw you guys play there. Think I just may make the 40 minute drive for some good pizza and beer)

What parts do you have trouble with? Is it the 3/4 measure right before the A?

Nope - its the main intro riff - I dont do it smooth enough.Also as it cycles around back to the riff ...
I end up making my own riff each time ...

Or you can play it straight 4/4 and sing "round & round, WOO! round & round" and do it a la February 1973.

UGH! One of my absolute LEAST favorite things about 1973 GD (and there aren't many things I DON'T care for from 1973 GD) is Loose Lucy played in full 4/4 when they were (painfully obviously) still figuring out what they wanted to do with the song. The intro with the harsh riff played quickly twice...oy.

By late 73 it was doing okay, if I recall my library well.....and by 74 it was cookin' before they stopped playing it altogether until 1990, when they busted it out with the old-school pace, but proper timing.

Oh Pappy! I thought we were kindred spirits! Guess not.

I love that early Lucy sound. A little harsh, a little R&B, a little raw! Spring 73 is, however, in my top 3 eras.

Mine too, SS - save for Loose Lucy.

That Dane Coliseum 73 show....sickleberry. But the Loose Lucy sucks rocks, IMO.

I love that era, 'cause there were no "1st set tunes" and "2nd set tunes". Just typically 2 MONSTER sets where ANYTHING GOES!



Even kindred spirits can disagree a bit here and there on the small stuff. That's small stuff.

The real discussion around Loose Lucy should be on just how brilliant it was to choose this tune to be played at the Blues Festival. We wanted to do a Jerry tune for the festival, although I don't know this for sure but in the 14 years of the festival this was going to probably be the first Jerry tune to be played. Loser and Sugaree were in the running. Since we had the two great female vocalist to do the backups we picked LL and IMHO we really nailed it. The tasty little sax licks are also nice in it. Plus it was a prefect choice out of GDTRFB which I also think we played well.

So what other original GD tunes would have been thought of for a blues festival gig???
