One that comes to mind because of his unusual self taught playing style (somewhat similar to Jordan) is the late Jeff Healy.

All I could think of when you said freak of nature was Stanley Jordan. Saw him up close at Tipitinas in N'Orleans in '97. Some people are just given insane gifts.

Still alive and on Tour now. Joe Bonamassa. Great show. Nice guy.
Woke up dreaming, acoustic, the volume and percussive effect he gets for some reason this song sticks in my head for days. I think he is even playing it better now, if ya get the chance go see him, trust me.

although I think Atkins and Zappa are great, they are not freak of nature/virtuoso types

That Buckethead clip was tremendous.
I gotta check him out.
Chet Atkins is a freak o nature though.
Just because he takes it slow sometimes doesnt mean he cant "Shred"
I think they call it melody ...
