Boy is it tough. We had just about decided on Gentle Thunder until I googled it and found it already in use.
How did you guys do it?

I ripped Bongs until it came to me. I then phoned my bandmates and informed them of our name. It was actually pretty easy. However we are thinking of renaming ourselves- this may be quite a bit more difficult than last time, but i am sure it will all work out. The Dead had this problem with the name the Warlocks, as you all well know. It will eventually just come, man.

You could try Rolling Thunder. I've never heard of a any bands with that name, or just use Gentle Thunder. Where's the other band located? If let's say their in California and your in the east somewhere than there's no real problem. Right?

Well, we could go ahead with GT, but I will probably set up a domain and web site, and want anyone searching for us (yeah, right) to not get a bunch of bad hits.
No hurry for us to get a name, but we were close on that one...

we are not really sure why we picked theCAUSE..but we started out being The Cause, but found out The Cause is a death metal band, so we became theCAUSE and we are not a death metal band! thecause.com was taken so we use theCAUSEjams.com.
we have thought that we should have had some more deadhead cosmic name, but I don't think that has kept us from being the big success we are today..10's of people come to see us everytime we play

Are you new age? Cause I think my old roommate had a cd called gentle thunder and it was like ambient drum and flute music or something. Kind of a soundtrack for gem and incense stores.

I always thought "Free Beer" would be a good name.
And, no, willmusic, we're not new age. Your roomie had what I found when I googled the name earlier. Too well known for us to use it.
We're doing a mix of stuff. Some Allmans, The Band, Traffic, Clapton, Dire Straits, Dylan, a handful of Dead songs, and some random other stuff. Some of it is very challenging for me to play; I have a lot of work to do before I can go out with this stuff. I am the only guitar. We also have bass, drums, & keys.
The Dead are my all-time favorites, so I wish we were doing more, but I have to take it easy on the other guys, although the keyboard player likes to play them.

The BASTARDS!!!!!!
When my whole family plays together (3 guitars and piano), we somewhat jokingly refer that as a "band practice" or rehearsal. We have jokingly referred to our band as "Four Blind Mice" for a variety of reasons. Well, after reading this thread, I decided to google Four Blind Mice and found this:

The bastards stole our name!!!
Oh well, my son never like that name anyway. But it does throw a wrench in the works as I was planning on naming our second album "Lost in the Maze". Back to the drawing board I suppose.

I wouldnt worry about it.
If you like it - use it.
If you were doing originals I would say come up with your own thing.
Lately I like
Cloud Hand - Crazyfingers
Mumblin' Bitches - Alligator
Good luck
