can anyone suggest a web site or somewhere one can learn to be a guitar tech? I really would like to learn how set up my own guitar and get into bringing back to life old guitars from pawn shops and stuff...

They have good tools, great books, videos, lot's of good resources. If you get on their mailing list, they send out alot of good tips regularly.

How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great, by Dan Erlewine... gives you everything you need to start working on your own minor repairs and setup... really an excellent book.

I agree, Stew Mac is a great place for learning resources and tools. There's absolutely nothing related to setting up a guitar properly that you can't learn to do yourself..I mean nothing; don't let anybody tell you you can't or shouldn't do it yourself. If you have the confidence, then you have the ability. A basic guitar setup requires no tools other than your truss rod wrench or bridge allen wrench (if needed) that came with the guitar.

About the only thing I wish I was good at is recrowning frets. That would mean having a systematic approach rather that wading in and wondering if I should have done something after it was too late.

It could end up like trying to get a four legged stool not to wobble.

Luthiers charge over $100 for this sort of service.

can you buy pre-shaped bodies somewhere online. I know there are strat and other generic bodies, but I am talking about something more unique. just wondering, appreciate any advice

Yeah I saw they offer a semi-hollow option on the VIP at no cost.

Getting into restoring old guitars is totally a great pursuit and something I want to get into in the future.

I set up my personal guitar, but its a rather new machine and only ever requires a little tweaking and I always find doing it yourself at first may take a little while longer, its much more satisfying to have it all set up just like you like.
