Grateful Dead Music Forum

Just curious if anyone else went down this road. I was into the metal scene, then a friend turned me on to dead and phish, and i am glad. Changed my life. Anyone else go through this?

That's me if you consider KISS a metal band. Used to hate the Dead at the time due to my brother constantly playing them, then one day, BAM! I finally understood and my world was turned upside down.

I grew up listening to classic rock, and then junior senior year of high school i was definately a metal/grunge head....then I met Jerry and my whole world was turned upside down and inside out!

Right here man haha. It was all about Killswitch Engage, Poison The Well, God Forbid etc. Then I made some hippie friends and there ya have it lol. That was about 5 years ago. Still listen to metal though and I still love it. Depends on my mood. The thing that I loved about Grateful Dead is how easy it is to start jammin to a song. Metal songs are soo damn structured that you HAVE to know how to play every little note or you get nothing. With the dead I put it on and just do my own thing just as jerry would.

I was into both the Dead & metal (Black Sabbath)in the mid seventies (hated disco). For me, it was easier to play metal and there were no musicians who I knew who were Dead Heads, in fact I was persecuted because I was a Dead Head (within my sphere of influence). It wasn't until the mid 90's when I started to play Grateful Music because I found musicians who were Dead Heads, also the fact that I was a more experienced player.

This was me also, until I heard the Dead in the late 80s. I started listening to them more and more and I got it. Wish I had heard and understood their music sooner so I could have seen them play live more. Now I can't get enough!

It's been long enough that I think I can freely admit that I saw Judas Priest 2 years in a row in 81 and 82. One year was Scorpions (Animal magnetism) and Whitesnake opening and the other was Saxon and someone I can't remember. I also saw Ozzie with Randy Rhodes on Blizzard of Oz tour (Def Leopard opened---1st time in the states), Pat Travers, Rainbow, Van Halen and a few other heavy metal/heavy rock bands...of course at the same time and was also seeing Zappa, the GD, Genesis, King Crimson and David Gilmore.....never got into the serious hardcore stuff though.

not metal, but punk. was real into punk rock until i began listening to the dead at about 16 and that began to take over. rancid, nofx, bad religion, anti-flag, less than jake, guttermouth, were a few of my favorite bands.

I've got a friend who did the opposite. He was a full on touring dead head. That said he was/is very impressionable. Anyway.. He's now a pierced, dreadlocked, death metal fan.

I guess I came from metal/classic rock too. I liked ozzy, judas priest,maiden, etc.. until about 83 and then it became strictly "classic rock" i.e. led zep,doors, jimi, etc.. then that fateful day a friend gave me a tape and told me too listen to it..

it was labeled "joe's dead tape the ultimate shit" it was a beginners primer of songs. From there it was like when you buy a volvo, suddenly you notice them everywhere.

yeah man i was the same way. I still enjoy listening to rancid.

See we have a different idea of the word metal. When I think metal I think the new stuff. Not like 80's hair metal.

I was a big southern/classic rock fan before I got the fever. I think it was junior year in high school when a friend and me drove down to a dead end on a bright sunny afternoon that looked onto a portion of long island sound, plopped in the best of 8 track, fire up and as soon as I heard lovelight I was hooked.

i dug the dead a few years ago when i had no idea who bob weir was, and didnt know about the importance of phil lesh. last year a few months after i started getting into phish a friend lent me winterland and i liked it. then i bought rockin the reign, fired up a phatty and put on dark star.

before the dead i was a gigantic zeppelin fan, i listened to zeppelin 2 as often as dick cheney kicks puppies. for the record i still think zeppelin 4 is the greatest hard rock album of all time.

Sure, I was into the punk/metal scene before mellowing out. It's still one of my guilty pleasures. I pop in a little Korn or Slipknot every now and then when I just want some noise - OK, lots of noise!
