So I have come to the decision i am going to buy a Fender American Standard strat. The guys is selling it for 750. What are your guys thoughts? I would like some help/advice. Thanks

The Strat. Nice choice. Definetely a classic. Just remember, don't SETTLE on any guitar (unless there's a monetary issue). Make sure it's something that's gonna represent you and fit the music that you play.


If I had the money, I'd be a Gibson man. Something about the SG, ES & Les Paul sounds that really do it for me. Take the Live/Dead album where Jerry's rockin' the SG.


I couldn't afford $2K+ for a Gibson ES so for my price range I couldn't ask for anything more than an Ibanez AS73BS http://www.ibanez.com/hollow/guitar.aspx?m=AS73
similar to cowboy special Bobby played in the '70's (not as flashy though), but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

how old is it?

Play it and see how you like it. That's really the only way to know.

I have an American standard Stratocaster and like it a lot, but I mostly play my Les Paul. I think if given the choice between single coil or humbucking sound, one tends to go back and forth for periods of time. I played the Fender exclusively for a while before going back to the Gibson.

2008 American Standards have some nice upgrades, going for $999. Might be worth looking into for comparison.

I love my American Strat - the action is a tad high so I put beefy strings on it to make it even harder to play.

i have a jap strat, 67 blonde reissue, paid $250. it's been everywhere with me, overseas' etc. not sure how much difference ther is between the jap and yankee makes...

About a year ago Guitar Center was selling SGs in discontinued colors (regular SG colors, just not shiny) for $600... True Gibsons, not Epiphones. they had a few of them. I found out last weekend that a friend of a friend got one about 4 years ago, same finish, same deal. Could be worth looking into. I bought one for my GF for her birthday and it really is a great guitar for the money.
