I think that one of the reasons that the site has been slow lately is that the googlebot may have been hitting the site a little too much. At one point yesterday, there were over 100 googlebots on the forum site alone! Every time googlebot hits the frontpage it also runs a query on the forum to get the latest posts. Ultimately, I don't mind google checking us out, but I think that it is using too much resources.
I am trying to "tame" googlebot a bit and see if that increases the responsiveness of the site. One of the things I am experimenting with is removing the top hits off the front page, and put them as a separate page that I can tell googlebot to stay away from.
The hopeful result is that we get googlebot to stop making so many database calls, and leave those for us...

Its not that its too slow. Its that our front page isnt the normal page. It doesnt show any posts; it just says somethin like "For the time being, click here to view the latest posts". Then when I click that it brings up a blank white page with the posts except the posts are written in the same font as this here and not like the big blue letters im used to seeing.

so are the forums going to be displayed on rukinds homepage again at some point, or do i just have to click on forums. It just doesn't look like home without those to greet me when I enter the web

I agree. I think most of us are logging on and then clicking on the "most active posts" link right away. Even though it's a separate page now, it seems like the "most active links" page opens as slowly as it did when it was the home page - or is it just me?? Looks like you couldn't keep the google-bots at bay.
the only difference is that now i have to open 2 pages to get to the active posts - 1 for the home page, and then 1 to get to the active posts.
I'm all for putting the active posts back up on the home page and waiting the extra 5-10 seconds for the home page to open up.

It wasn't just impacting the home page but the whole forum.

it's slow because it is a resource hog that slows down the database. Speaking like a geek, the information in a database is only as good as people using it. When that database call is on the frontpage, everyone is using the database regardless of if they want the information provided by the call. If database calls are like gasoline, having the active posts on the frontpage was like driving a Hummer. By moving it over, only the people who want the information get the information, and you can wait for it, because you understand.
I feel like the site has sped up significantly since changing the page, and I feel like we have isolated the incident. So, I understand the frontpage needs something new, but I don't think it's going to be the most active posts.

IMO....
Making one extra click on the "New" front page is minor.
As far as I know "PHPBB" does this out of the goodness of his heart for the benefit of us all. I know no-one is "Ragging" anyone here at all and most have provided constructive suggestions concerning how the site should be.
Being in the "Industry" of electrons... I understand DB calls can multiply faster than rabbits on Viagra and according to my own DBA's it is not an easy task to monitor that.... Easy to log perhaps... anyone ever read a log file from 20, 30, 100 GB DB. I've seen grown men drop and fold into the fetal position trying to re-trace the steps of a DB call....
I am sure everyone shares these sentiments....
I am very grateful for this site as my extracurricular activities pale in comparison to what they were in the past. This provides a touch of back in the day for me.
Drop this site to a test only.... and I would still show up when I could.
One man’s thoughts.
PEACE,
Phil
