he's awesome and to think its only his amp the SG and his fingers to get that sound....damn makes me want to throw my guitar in the trash

I saw a show of that ABB tour last summer. WOW!!!!

Do you know what kind of AMP(s) he has?

a friend of mine from america just sent me a copy of the crossroads 2007 dvd, and i have a new-found respect for derek. He played an amazing slide solo on the derek & the dominoes song "tell the truth" on the dvd. he deos duane allman justice on that song!

I believe Derek uses a '66 Fender Super Reverb.

Damn that kid is fun to watch. I like how slick he was when he put the slide on. I would have dropped it.

Hard to argue with the title this thread.

I also think it would be hard to find a more enjoyable guitar player and tone to listen to than D Trucks.

with the obvious exception of any Jerry from '65-'95.

I think Trucks is great. But listen to some of the early Allmans stuff. When Duane and Oakley were there. It was some amazing stuff. Duane, imho is still the pinnacle when it comes to bluesy Georgia slide!

Don't mess with the reissues. My Super Reverb reissue went to the shop 3 times before I sold it and went with a vintage. I ended up getting a good trusty vintage '66 for less than I paid for the brand new piece of crap. All I'm saying is don't waste your time. Looking around is worth the effort.

The cool thing about his rig is that he uses Pyle car audio speakers.

this is the thought everytime I listen to him play. I new it had to be something unconventional about his "clean tone". So a super reverb and car audio speakers would explain it. It just goes to show, tone is everything. A killer chop needs a killer tone.

Well, I think Duane and Derek are two different beasts. Derek has more of a ragaish sound to him, and he plays more world music styles than Duane did. But if I gotta listen to a rock guy play slide guitar, Duane is still tops. Everything he did was impeccable, and he's one of many musicians I wish had never died. We lost alot when Duane wrecked that motorcycle.

I think it's interesting that we see the same phenomenon with Trucks as we did with Stevie Ray in the 80's... all the younger fans seem to tend towards opining that he has surpassed the master innovator that he most emulated in his approach to the instrument- in SRV's case it was Hendrix(who is simply untouchable imo; to take me up on this point please don't hijack the thread), and in Derek's case it's Duane Allman(ditto). I believe both of the next-generation players have been able to approach their idols in brilliance (but not equal them at their own game) at which point (to their credit) they branched out stylistically, embracing diverse cultural musics, modern pop, funk etc.
