Anolog to Digital?

I was hoping some of you could point me in the right direction here. I am looking for a good program to transfer music from an analog tape to wav or MP3 format. I tried capturing the sound with Audacity but it sounds horrible. Any suggestions on a good program? Preferably a free program!
