nut files are pricey but this should help and their cheaper and work better than the $90 ones. Materials needed 1.A set of feeler gauges found in an auto store,used to measure gaps in spark plugs,valves et.2 A dremel with a cutoff fiber bit.Simply take the gauges apart and take the ones that are 1 to 2 sizes larger than each guitar and or bass strings and cut small teeth into one end of them with the dremel.Thats it and they work great i've been using them for a couple of years now. If you need to see a pic of them a guy sells them on ebay as norman nut files, its under instruments-guitar-builder luthier supply.Peace David

I have seen an alternative but don't know if is good as your method, is usig Wipo tip cleaning, how are designed for cleaning welding and cutting tips. I have bought a set on ebay and i will test it on a new kow bone blake for made a new telecaster nut if it work good i will send you a mail with picture and details.
