You forgot over-saturated, over-commercialized, and what the fuck happened to the "real" festivals anyways??? Remember when Bonnaroo was for the folks like us, and not for American Idol contestants or other crap like that?

i was considering going to bonnaroo when zeppelin was supposed to be the opener,unfortunately i graduate high school on the same day it starts. plus i've heard nothing but bad news about the scene. how's langerado?

if i went to bonnaroo it would only be to help my friend who has a booth. I wouldn't give any money to those f*cks. Lets not forget that Mtv bought superfly productions so that includes Jazzfest in N.O.L.A. and Vegoose. If you want a real festival then you have to go to the Gathering of the Vibes or the Grateful Garcia Gathreing

I've also heard good things about the Teluride Festival in Colorado. I guess thats more bluegrassy but it seems like the scene is a lot more peaceful.

Telluride is definitely a good scene. They do a bluegrass festival and a blues festival every year. Both are outta site! The main difference is that they are (gasp!) ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC! I honestly think all the bonnaroo shadesters would feel out of place with no one to buy their meth and heroin. I too remember when festivals were our little "secret". It's a touchy subject for me as I end up somewhere between sad and angry at the thought of the current festival "conditions". And yes krzykat! Gathering of the Vibes is awesome! Very "Grateful" scene. Feels eerily reminiscent of the festivals before "the change" happened. Maybe it was just me (I know it wasn't), but when I saw the Rolling Stone article listing what kind of drugs you could buy at bonnaroo, for how much, and what "fun" combinations in which you could consume them, I knew it was all over. I mean there are still good ones out there. They're just few and farther between. AND FOR FUCKS SAKE BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TELL ABOUT IT CAUSE THEY'LL TAKE IT FROM US AND SELL IT TO A BUNCH OF CRACKHEADS!!! i need a drink....

I went to Bonnaroo last summer and have mixed feelings about it. Here is my review:

Very commerical. Everything is sponsered now. Even Dunkin' Donuts was there. A lot of drunk (drunk!) college kids who don't understand the scene. Undercover cops as well. HOWEVER: There are still hoardes of like-minded kind people there. I met many wonderful people who shared with me everything they had and showed me a great time. The music was GREAT. There were a few "pop" bands there, but they are easily avoided. There is so much music going on that there is always a great band playing.

I was disgusted by the Flaming Lips. Their shows are so wasteful, hundreds of thoudsands of laser pointers littered the ground. Pounds and pounds of confetti forever engrained into the dirt. Yuck.

Overall I just think Bonnaroo has outgrown it's self. It started out as something good, but has since imploded on itself. To many people for the grounds to hold. I will not go back their again, but will never forget the amazing time I had.


I have to say a great festival is 10,000 Lakes in Minnesota. It is really, really laid back. Everyone there is RUKind worthy. But I feel it will become the next Bonnaroo, so I recommend checking it out this summer before its to late.



Another good festival is Hookahville in Ohio. A lot of drunks, but friendly drunks. Its a different scene but still very enjoyable.


My 2 cents.

Telluride is a great place to listen to music, and the scenery is unreal, but I think the scene is way too crowded for that town, not to mention that as the night goes on it gets harder and harder to hear bluegrass, unless you consider Jewel and Michelle Shocked bluegrass.

The scenery isn't as nice, but the OTHER bluegrass festival in Colorado is Rockygrass. It's run by planet bluegrass as well (it's on their campus), and even they admit it's the real bluegrass festival in Colorado. It's in Lyons, near Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park. Certainly it's no Telluride, but the music is way better (unless you like Jewel and Michelle Shocked).

Hey all, has anybody heard anything about Langerado? Its at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation, and its got a pretty good lineup. I bought a ticket the other day, I'll be down there March 6-9!

Can't wait for festival season here in Oregon... Northwest String Summit is in an awesome setting, perfect size (around 4000-6000), and I love the band selections and subsequent cross-jamming that occurs. Danny Barnes is coming back this year! And I'm psyched to check out Great American Taxi.

Has anyone ever been to the Black Sheep Family Reunion? it is a small festy, (about 700 ppl last year) that is an invite only affair. Main reason i ask is becuz Tigerstrat mentioned Festival season in Or.
