I was converting some of my video's to DVD and I came across one I have of the grand opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think it was in '95. It was a huge concert in Cleveland that featured acts old and new, all performing classic songs from people who were inducted.

Now, I've had my share of beefs with the Hall of Shame, but this concert is one of the better shows I've ever seen in my life! The DVD is edited, so it misses some of the excellent stuff. Anyone familiar with it? The Dead didn't play, but Hornsby does this great intro about Jerry and then rips out Terrapin on the piano (no vocals) and then does a beautiful I know you rider and Scarlet that he sings. It's his full band and it's really great.
The other highlights are just too numerous to mention but I'll throw a few out:

Springsteen and E st. Band backing Jerry Lee Lewis
Aretha Franklin showing why she's the queen of soul
Lou Reed backed by Soul Asylum
Johnny Cash
George Clinton and P Funk
Allman Bros.
etc
In between acts, they showed highlights of past ceremonies and classic acts (Muddy Waters at Newport!)
It was 6 hours and kicked some serious ass! Check it out even if it's just the released DVD.

No, this wasn't the Dead's induction, but a concert to highlight the opening of the Hall itself in Cleveland. There were inductions as far back as '86 that were held each year in NYC. Cream famously reunitited for one of these events. But they never had a hall until the one was built in Cleveland and the concert I am referring to occurred to commemorate the facility being opened. I think Astroman is correct.

Being from Cleveland I remember it...some of it anyway. I knew some people that went. It had some highlights for sure. I remember some equipment snafu's screwed up some otherwise stellar rendetions of some tunes. Jackson Browne did a great cover of "Redemption Song".

Recorded live at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio on September 2, 1995. Includes liner notes by David Wild.

Booker T & The MG's' "Green Onions" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Al Green's "A Change Is Gonna Come" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

On Labor Day weekend of 1995, a gaggle of Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers joined with a group of younger artists to inaugurate the Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland. With Booker T and the MG's as the house band and a roster of some of the greatest performers in rock and roll history, it was an event that will be remembered forever, especially with the help of this 2-disc chronicle of the concert.

Not surprisingly, the old timers make the biggest impact, with Jerry Lee Lewis exerting his rocking authority on "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and Sam Moore of Sam & Dave dishing out some deep soul on "Hold On I'm Coming." Other highlights include Al Green's spine-tingling rendition of the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come," and the understated cool of Booker T & the MG's as they step into the spotlight for a lowdown "Green Onions." As this 28-song document proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, rock and roll is here to stay.

Seriously though, how can every site have it wrong?

How can Dead.net say Jerry opted out but it really happened in 95 after he died?

I think people are possibly confusing the 95 induction remembering rockers who have passed...

Strummin': ease up on the pipe man, they are agreeing with you. Both amyjared and astroman agree that the Dead were inducted in 1994. Amyjared was talking about the 1995 show to commemorate the opening of the physical hall of fame, which both of them agree was not the show where the Dead were inducted.

I hope this clears things up.

we are talking about two different things, the op is talking about the above concert from 1995, sept 2, I think we can all agree Jerry was gone by then, although, I saw his cut out on the beach in Hawaii.

hmmm, they inducted hunter but not barlow, that's kind of a slap in the face...

Yes, this is the show, but I taped it off the actual broadcast and it has much much more to offer, like the full Hornsby set, Springsteen doing She's the One, Heart doing some great singing, the Kinks rocking out Lola as only they can do, etc. plus the between songs classics that I previously mentioned. I wish the DVD was more complete!
PS. Dylan was pretty poor.
