thought this was kinda cool being the dso fan i am, kind of rare to hear john k on mando... its about a 1/4 the way in... FOTD then ripple

JK and I would sometimes play as a duo of him:mando/fiddle, me:acoustic guitar, sometimes joined by our friend Lee on upright bass...in coffee shops or little art fairs and such. He gets his mando chops directly from his classical violin background, which in his 20's he used to heavily explore bluegrass, Hot Club/Grappelli, 70's fusion players like Jerry Goodman and especially Jean-Luc Ponty who is maybe as a big of an idol to him as Garcia. JK is really a monster on violin, I'd love to hear him do "Bowing, Bowing" or "Dance Of Maya" again sometime! I have some basement tapes and such I should consider A/D transferring, and posting clips of.

That was actually probably 94-95, a year or two before Wingnut, in which I played electric bass 96-97. We also had a fusion/prog synth guitarist named Chris who had the full vintage "Pat Metheny" Roland/Ibanez synth system. JK played mostly 5-string electric violin (through his guitar rig, which at the time included his Fender Super 60 as a combo with Celestion Vintage30 (big Trey-head at the time), plus full fx... totally awesome and huge with the OC-2 and SD-1 engaged). John switched to guitar for certain songs, which at the time was his gold SSS-routed Paul Reed, with JB Jr. pickups. Think he played that one for like the first few months of DSO, but I didn't even see them until late in 98 maybe. Even though they hit huge right at their start about a month after forming in late 97, (with a lil help of a massive newsletter campaign drawing on all of their previous bands lists... nice kick start to send mail out to 4000 local heads!), while WE took several months to firm up our lineup, I still thought Paradise Waits (the 20th century edition, with me and Farmer and the aforementioned Lee) was going to be the next big dead band in Chicago!:lol: heavy denial and shock I guess ...we settled on being popular with the hippies in Rockford, which was really a crazy beautiful scene when I look back. Amazing scene for such little bluecollar city on the prairie. You can tell I've had my quadruple espresso this morning... I'm sharing a lot!

During my tenure with Wingnut (which gigged a few times in 98 or 99 with DSO's bassist and drummer), John and I would sometimes play out as an acoustic duo opening act for his former group Uncle John's Band, for Ralph's Kind (Paul & Derek who went to CO and formed Phix) and I think we might have opened for We You They once as well*. This was Acoustic Wingnut, with me on bass and him on his acoustic... we would do some Bob & Rob type stuff in that configuration- Victim or the Crime, Easy To Slip... Lazy River Road.

*= my current (Portland) group's Bobby player, Jonathan Ayers was a founding guitarist in We You They: popular Chicago jammers throughout the 90's. Jon & I hadnt known each other back in Chicago though- imagine my surprise when we had been bandmates for a couple of years and he sprang that on me.
