alright well, i have been a huge computer nerd for most of my life, and last night while i was driving i had an incredible idea that has to do with trading shows between one another. I'm sure some of you have heard of the program called "mIRC" but in case you havn't, all it basically is is a program where you can join different servers and then different channels within the server. Well a few years ago i used to use this program to get movies, music, games, etc. Well last night, it dawned on me that this is an incredibly easy way we can trade shows amongst one another. Basically all we would have to do is join the same server as each other, and then just create a channel name called "deadheads" or something like that (it doesnt really matter what you call it). but once you are in the channel with each other, you can select someones nickname and send them any file you want, such as grateful dead shows. If anyone is interested in trying this, let me know and i will show you how to do it and how easy it is to do.
p.s. i know this might sound complicated, but once you learn it once it is very easy. I feel that this is a very good and simple solution to trade shows between one another. if people are interested in this, i can post a detailed tutorial on how to get everything started up

How do shows transfer?

theirs a few ways you can transfer the shows. You can either compress the folder into a zip file (or just send the zip file if u keep them from archive). You can also send each individual mp3 file. If you have any flac formatted shows you can just send the wav files.

How would you download, song by song or one big file, or both depending?

it could be both, if its a zip it will just be one big file

^ search for what you want, it gives you a mIRC server, channel, bot to message. you message the bot it uses DCCing (mIRC function to directly connect) and sends you a file of your choice.
edit: this is an example of what he was trying to get at, there arent dead shows on there to my knowledge

I guess what I'm asking is this: is the trading person to person or can anyone just grab whatever is on the server.
This is tangential to the archive issue.
If it is person to person then it's a trade and no issues. If anyone can grab whatever you have it is no longer a trade.

its a trade, not archival.. IRC transfers with DCC, which is a direct peer-peer connection.
so all thats left to do is pick a server and a roomname (#rukind) ??

like Rounin said its from person to person. The channel that everyone is in works pretty much like a chat room. You could request for a certain show and if someone has it, all they have to do is join the channel and send the file(s) to you. Its basically no different than burning the shows and giving the cd to someone, without all that hassle.
