Anyone else deal with this and if so how? I recently sold a bunch of gear and ready to sell a few more things but I just can't bring myself to do it. The I'm pondering putting up is stuff I haven't used in 6 months and don't have much use for it nor desire to keep it but can't bring myself to post it for sale!

Thoughts? Help? Advice?

I feel if any of these things mean anything to you on an emotional level or take you back in time in a positive way...Keep them or give them away as gifts to a close friend or family member...My wife and daughter bought me my first guitar(an 80 dollar classical w/ a neck as fat and wide as the computer screen I'm looking at) but i learned the basics on that thing and it;s in the corner in my music room gathering dust...the neck broke and i glued it back on. It's not even playable anymore...I would not get rid of it for any reason...It means to much to me...My current gear I'm leaving to my kids. Hope this is of some help. I keep everything! Even shit that is broken. I learned a lesson a long time ago. I had a star wars action figure that was unopened, and my dad told me not to open it, i did, and lost it, about a year ago i heard that someone sold one for about 11,000 dollars. I still kill myself till today, so i never get rid of anything, i think twice about getting rid of

Well, if anyone has a RT-921 real tube reverb, i would gladly hold it for you, until you need it back!!!!!!

Sometimes its not worth all the hassles to sell something for a $100 bucks.People calling ,poking thru your shit.
Amps and guitars and high value stuff I keep.
If you live in an apartment, learn to decorate with gear.
Amps are NOT coasters or ashtrays.

Also over the years I been given so many things that people didnt want anymore.Mics ,Mic stands,cables,drum parts,guitars,etc.
Lots of the time the free stuff really helped me out.
Find someone in need and Pass it on.

I'm probably in a different situation than you...

I have three kids and I am teaching them all to play an instruments - Drums, Bass and guitar. I have quickly learned that "I" don't have as much stuff as I thought I had... My kids however, they are stocked up. They also know to stay away from the my "rack" everything else is fair game as long as they don't steal my wall warts - power supplies.

I have also given away some things to friends who are encouraging their kids to play guitar. I always give this stuff away with a caveat. If the kid loses interest in guitar, I get the stuff back. As long as it is being used, it is theirs for as long they want it.
I try to pay it forward. When I was but a young pup, I would have given my right arm... well perhaps leg... to have some of the stuff I am giving away now. The kids love it... They see it as "Retro" gear... I didn't know I was retro....

It seems you have a "Helping" soul from reading many of your posts... You'll do what's right.

Tough one, I just went through a "cleansing" last week, in fact. I'd say if you need the money (which I'm sure isn't the case), sell it. If not, and you are sure you won't ever use the stuff again, give it away to a friend who may just be just starting out, unless of course you can trade it in for better gear, which is what I did last week. There were 3 pedals (boss comp, MXR comp, zoom multi FX, and an old pedal board) that I traded in for better gear because I knew I'd never use either of them again with the stuff I have now. I recently got an Analogman BiCompROSSer, so the Boss & MXR were useless. The Zoom was the 1st pedal I ever had, one of those ones you buy early on to learn what FX you like, and I traded them all in for a sick pedal board w/ clean power supply. Much better for my signals. But I kept my Ernie Ball volume pedal, my Dan Electro French Fry (auto wah), and Ibanez auto wah, because I could see myself using them somewhere somehow down the line. So I'd say if there's a chance, even a slight one, KEEP the gear. But if not, give it away or trade it in - it's just gonna collect dust.

Overall I've divided my gear into 3 camps:
1 - main line-up or alternative
2 - keep for one day in the future
3 - not used, no plans to use

It's this third camp I am looking to sell off.

Phil- would you give away high quality or vintage gear? I dig what you are saying and I would totally do that with some of the things I'm talking about but I've got no youngins around me and my little nephews are under 3 so not quite yet!

Benny - my plan was to get rid of a bunch of old gear I no longer want / use and parlay that into some other gear that I really want!

It's actually kinda odd. At the end I'll have invested some extra money, sold tons of stuff and I'll have less gear!

My reccomendation would be to kick your Buy/Sell/Trade quotient up a few notches.
I have had a great time over the last several years buying/selling/trading gear, mostly through our local Craigslist and a few Forums that I frequent.
Any time I see a piece of gear in my home that is not being used, I equate it to cash that is simply tied up for the moment.
There is no harm in posting gear for sale or trade. And you'd be surprised at how many people are very interested in gear you perceive as being of no value to you.
Over the years I have also given away a good amount of Pedal Steel instructional material that I was no longer using.

I wouldn't be so quick to give my old TSR&D rack mount rock-man stuff to a little one. And you're right, my vintage stuff does not leave the house without me..... Point taken!

I have to admit after reading your previous post, I did a little remembering.... I did ditch an mid-70's Gibson V, a home-made Pepto Bismol (sp?) Pink Tele a white Marshall half stack (I had a purple bottom I found and used with it), a RD220 (Leo's copy of his own work on the Twin) and a plethera of pedals for... Get this... All rack mount effects, Crown Amp and a couple of monitors. WORSE DECISION OF MY LIFE!

That was one of those "Seemed like a good idea at the time" decisions. Regret, regret, regret... This can go with out saying, you are likely of a little more sound mid and judgement than I was at the time. As you have already decided what to keep, what to sell and what to give away. I saw shiny things and pulled a Homer Simpson.... Ooooooh Bouncy lights....

To add insult to injury... I am now a hopeless DIY-er. Long story short, I went to visit a buddy that had a guitar but did not play enough to have fun at it. His home flooded and his Kramer Barretta was caught in the flood. He did not realize it and the guitar dried out and ended up molded, paint popping off of the wood. In a word - busted. When I pulled up to his house, he was putting the case w/ the guitar in the TRASH. I opened it up, saw the carnage and took it home. Trashed the pick-ups and the pots. sanded the body down to wood, cleaned the neck and replaced what I had to for the Floyd Rose.

Today, that guitar is my high octane, Hair-metal, spandex wearing, "Show me your (insert vulgar terminology for womens breast here)" fire-breathing axe. Not my main axe but fun to play.

Not sure really where I'm going with this but as others have mentioned, regardless of what you sell, give away, etc... There may some regrets down the road, but hey.... What can you do. An option might be to send me the list with some $ amounts and who knows..... Seriously, let me know what hits the "Sell" pile.

Man... I just re-read all of that... I need to lay off the coffee this late in the day...

LOL! That 1 piece of gear is my exception to the rule. Yes, I own one, yes I love it, no I don't use it, no plan to but will not let it go.

I thought about pairing it with a Fender Pro Jr for some recordings.

I am with you. I just sold a fender jeff beck strat that i loved the neck on but never used because i never picked it up. my 73 strat is my main, with the 60 strat coming out on occasion..but i did parlay that into buying a 72 SG custom, which is fun.

Thought of this thread earlier today as I'm thinking of gear that has come in and out since then...

I've since acquired a couple new guitars, processors and amps. And sold off a few of each as well.

I'm sure I'll be on Hoarders on A&E soon....
