I am wondering what everyone is using to get their trey sound. I am debating buying a PRS Hollowbody II. the guitar looks most like Trey's Leugendoc (sp.). It also has dual humbuckers like Trey uses. Any thoughts??

PS. I already have a 70 Ross Compressor and a TS9.

I've found a pretty convincing setting on Line 6 Guitarport, but I dunno how much that would help you. Imitation wise, I'm playing through a fender bassman with a compressor and an Ibanez screamer (I think it's supposed to be the TS-808). I use a Gibson Flying V, and it sounds pretty good, but you can't gig with that setup unless you have a Podxt (or you get the actual setup). I don't know a ton about this stuff, but you said you already have a compressor and a TS-9, so if you were to get the hollowbody and a decent tube amp, that would be some sweet tone

I forgot to mention i use a vintage 65 Deluxe Reverb and Mesa Mark 3. I think Trey uses a '66 DR now. He used to use a Mesa in the early 90s. I am really looking to see what kind of guitar to get. I have all solid body fenders with single coils.

The Trey influenced guitarist I play with has a maple neck/fretboard Telecaster w/ the bar pickup at the neck and a humbucker at the bridge. He plays through a Mesa Boogie DC-5 and has the TS9. He gets pretty good Trey sound with that rig. His sustain is excellent when we do the final movement of Divided Sky.

Get a Resurrection Fishy Hollowbody! Mine should be here soon! Other than that, I use 2 Analogman tubescreamer's (silver mod), a TS9 & a TS808, along w/ a nice compressor, which you already have (just got my Analogman bicompROSSer, love it...I can hold until until the end of the month!), and a nice tube amp, which you already have. Currently I am playing through a Gibson SG faded, and it seems to do the trick.

Sweet. How much was the Fishy? Also what did you pay for your bi-comp? I am in a bidding war right now on ebay and it is getting ridiculous. I like the 70 Ross compressor but i am worried about reliability issues when gigging.

My friend Pat gets a pretty good Trey sound. He uses a LP copy, 2 TS9's, a compressor of some sort and a Mesa Boogie Mark 3. He pretty much can get right in there as far as the sound goes. I don't think the hollowbody makes a huge difference other than for feedback. I think you went withsome Humbuckers, tube screamers and a compressor you could probably get pretty close.

Interstingly enough, I feel like i can get a decent enough trey tone with my Strat (Mexi with Seymour Duncan single coil sized humbuckers on the neck and bridge), plugged into my fender Deville with the Drive set at more drive with the drive knob at 3, trebel at 5, bass at 8, mid at 7, and reverb around 5, pressence at 4-6. That gets me a pretty good sound without soundling like i want to be exactly Trey, just getting close. I used the neck pickup... on the strat, all my knobs all the way to 10

Sweet. Paul, I am interested in the settings he uses on the Mesa Mark III. I already have one of those so that would be cool to get the sound from. Sounds like i need to get myself a humbucking guitar. I have all single coils now.

1960 Strat -
I have an old Charvelle Strat copy - '80 - '82(? - I never looked it up) as well as another "Real" strat.
I have quick disconnects on the Charvelle Strat to the output jack of the guitar. I have had my guitar guy create four "Blanks" of the pick guard. One of the three has been set up with EMG 81 and 84's. The stock pick guard is loaded with three factory single coils. I have two more blanks that I have big plans for....
One, will have a midi "Trigger" pick-up, an old Dual HB (Bridge) I've had laying around and perhaps a single coil in the middle, and another HB or single in the neck position.
The third... Who knows...
Point being, it is TOO EASY to swap out the pick guard to a 100% different sound when simply changing strings.I.e. Poor mans way to have a bunch of different sounds with a single guitar.
Having said all of that, I seriously doubt I would do that to my '72 strat or any other guitar I don't want to screw up.
The only draw-back... When I use the regular everyday HB, (non-active electronics) they tend to sound a little tinny as they are only mounted to a piece of plastic... Solution... I get a block of wood, mount to the underside of the pick up and that provides the guitar to "contribute" to the tone.

All of this to say that when I use the effects, they all will have an obvious different sound depending on the guitars configuration. It also helps that I am not in a gigging band and it is not a bother to me to take the 15 minutes and change the configuration. When recording, I may "Burn" a set of strings to change the guitar tone, but what the hey....
I guess this is the old man version of "Experimentation".....
