few years back HE did a guest star album too , with james taylor and joey strummer and i think some others.. he is really a master of the craft.
one of those vids they have on tv is him and clapton playing together on stage for something.. old.. clapton does a riff and then mark does the riff a few seconds later .. clapton smiles and mark says (you can lip read it ) "did i do that right? it was really hard to learn it"
clapton repsonds "you think YOU had trouble? i had to WRITE it!" true masters of the craft
yes i've seen knoppfler.. a long time ago and not so long ago and both times i left feeling like i'd seen something really strong..
my 2 cents .. hope folks don't mind the ramble

I've only seen him once with Dire Straits back in the "Money for Nothing" days. Don't remember much because I was so stoned but had a great time. I would love to see him solo some time.

Definitely go see him.. He is the MOST underappreciated guiarist around imho. He also is a great songwriter. Its hard to believe all his playing is fingerpickin'

Without a doubt - GO SEE HIM.
I agree w/ HighPeaks, one of the most underappreciated git players around. Great song writer, great picker; I bet the concert will be a blast. Man, I wish he'd come around New England, I'd mos def drop everything & go see him. Defintely one of my favorite guitarists of all time.

oh yeah, gotta agree with everyone so far. Knopfler is the man.
Here's a clip of Knopfler playing with "some other guy". Always liked Dire Straits but this really turned me on to Mark as a guitar player.
By all means go.
I saw he and Chet Atkins in Nashville many moons ago.
One of the very best "Guitar" shows I have had the pleasure to witness.
Have fun and sit close....
Peace,
Phil

Go see him. Just rent "All The Roadrunning" great concert photage and sound from a show with his tight band and Emmylou Harris. Songwriting, guitar, arrangements and understated singing and stage presense make for a good show. His tone is unbelievable!

st. stephen,
did you go see knopfler in Germany? I just saw that he's coming to Turkey this summer, too. Seeing as this will be the only band that remotely resembles my music tastes in Turkey this year, I think I pretty much have to go. Just wondering what about impressions from his shows in the past year.

If you get a chance - listen to "Sailing to Philadelphia" with Mark Knopfler and James Taylor - that song just knocks my socks off!

this thread sparked my interest, so yesterday i dug into my old cd's and found one that someone had given me a long time ago, but i never listened to - Dire Straits' live album Alchemy.
DAMN!! Knopfler really jams in a live setting. I'd only heard a few studio tracks from Dire Straits, but they rocked live!!
I think Maybeck09 hit the nail on the head when he said "his tone is unbelievable!"
