I'm about to be in the market for a new (home) stereo system. My current system is about 20 years old. I used to be a big Sony fan, so I have a Sony receiver, Sony dual cassette deck and a Sony 5-CD changer. I have crap Bose speakers that have been passed down, around, back and sideways. The plan is to scrap the lot and start over, but I don't think I'll be able to float that past mrs. jck_strw all at once, so I'll do it a piece at a time. :)

First thing I'd like to replace is the receiver and speakers. If anyone knows anything about a good stereo setup, it's deadheads. What do other people have in their stereo setup? I've got no budget yet, so I'm looking for anything right now.

I went mid-priced and got a Harmon-Kardon theater system and Polk Audio speakers and sub. Now, when I say mid-priced, that was about $3K. The theater systems have definitely gon down in price since I bought mine. Harmon-Kardon is really good and has such a full sounding sound if that makes sense. But, I cannot find them in the US anymore. I don't know what happened to them. Also try Denon. Very similar in quality and price. They have a 85 wpc version for something like $350 at Circuit City. Polk speakers and subs are definitely the way to go. I ran the specs on the ones I bought and the only way I could get better speakers was to almost triple my budget. But there's the deal, circuit city has those for $649 with the sub. So, for about $1K, you could get what I paid almost $3K for 6 years ago!!!

I do not know whether you live in a house or an apartment and what your size needs are. I live in an apartment and I have EPOS 12 speakers and they are hooked up to an NAD receiver (C352) and NAD CD player (C660) . I have been running them for over 8 years and I am very happy with the set up. There is power to spare. I never have to run the volume more than 1/4 of the way and room is full with sound. Nice bass etc. The whole set up was about $2500 including some decent cables (which are a must).

This is for a house. I'm not interested in blowing the doors off the house, just good quality sound reproduction.

Thanks for the pointers. I was already looking at a Denon setup, so that's definitely a possibility. Which Polk speakers do you have?

If your looking for some decent stuff, Take a look at a company called ADI. They are a distributor of Denon as well as many others. They primarily work with the commercial and"Home Automation" market. They are nationwide and their prices seem very reasonable.
