Well, my practice regiment is now set thats fine but I need more bands to play then just the Dead! Can you guys suggest any bands with some nice guitar for me to try? Any you like to play, all I pretty much do is the Dead. Thanks

The Beatles are essential. So are The Allman Brothers. There is also this guy called Jimi Hendrix.
One of my favourite guitar players is Os Mutantes's Sérgio Dias. You won't regret to check them out.

Anybody !!!! Theres millions fo great players out there .... I have been listening to alot of Yonder lately, fastest picker I have heard in awhile, very fluid and clean with every note

I recomend select Pink Floyd songs. There are a few Phish songs that arent too complicated (Bathtub Gin and Waste come to mind). The Beatles are a no-brainer, IMHO, we do While My guitar gently Weeps, Love Me Do and rock the heck outa Let it Be, pop-punk style. There are some great Little Feat songs out there.

Lots. Just pick some songs you dig and play them.

Django Reinhardt, Doc Watson, Les Paul, Leo Kottke...

Man, I've been listening to Django lately - bought a 4-cd set titled "Live from Rome" or something like that - and it is absolutely fascinating stuff. No joke. Just the combination of the time period, the tone of the instruments, and his incredible sense of style and imagination is truly inspiring in a way I can't get today.

1. Find a Blues guy you like and spend countless hours deconstructing and reconstructing licks & solos.

2. Repeat for about a year

3. Move on to Tigerstrat's list.

work your way up the timeline, hooker, cash, vaughn, jerry, trey, cinniger, so forth. use techniques from all kinds of music. metal, to bluegrass, i believe then you have a wider variety of things to work with

In my town (Kansas City), you cannot swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting a white boy who says he's a blues guitar player. They all list their influences and SRV is never one of them. THen you hear them play and they clearly have spent hours and hours and hours playing along to "Play like SRV" videos. And, wow, they all have horrid "Guitar Face".

I avoid the blues like the plauge. I love REAL blues, I have lots of BB King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin Wolf, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson etc... in my Record/CD/MP3 collection. But you will never EVER hear me play a blues song.

Those honkeys have ruined it for me.

Can't go wrong with The Radiators, tons of great originals as well as cool arrangements of blues, trad and covers. You can listen to them on the Live Music archive.

The Radiators --- sweet choice.

A good example (like the GD) of how two guitar styles mesh well together. One guy's pretty much a shredder and the other is more rootsy. They bring it together nice though.
