Okay now they are 2 different types of music, but lets compare in certain category's

Rhythm: Trey. In a lot of phish trey is just keeping the rhythm until its his time to let loose

Melody: Jerry. Duh...this is jerrys bread and butter

Speed: Trey hands down. trey can bust out some crazy solos. not saying jerry didnt have the speed but he sure doesnt use it alot

Creativity: Tie/Jerry. they both took a style of music that was nothing and made it huge give it a lil to jerry because without jerry there is no trey

Attitude: JERRY. trey is just a dickhead sometimes lol

but thats my take on things...now to compare something similar String cheese's Bill Nershi and Jerry Garcia..thats where its really at.

this was supposed to be a reply to lazy lightnin's trey vs jerry bonanza

why does this have anything to do with me?

SCI, you have no idea what you are talking about with ANY of the above.

Jerry could ABSOLUTELY be a dick too (see the ways he "handled" his firing of Merl or Dave Kemper, his breakups with MG, Manasha or Barbara Meier), and both times I've met him, Trey went out of his way to be VERY cool to me.

And no, JG did not "give birth" to Trey. Try Jimmy Page, Miles Davis, Carlos Santana and Frank Zappa. Trey's guitar AND copmpositional style is almost totally distinct from Jerry's, especially the earlier you go, and I have never heard him even try to sound like Garcia.

All these comparisons of two of my favorite, most amazing musicians are VERY unkind, imho; although I would guess either J or T would just laugh and tell you to get a life.

You do not think jerry gave birth to trey? i understand that his playing style is nothing like jerrys you know but how do you think a jam band like phish would make it without the fathers of jam you know i just dont think that phish's whole festival scene would have made it you know. i also understand that jerry was a dick too but treys comment to rolling stone after jerry's death..paraphrasing here cause of my bad memory but it was about it being a good thing since phish would rule the jam community. I also know that some of my comments up there may pertain just to how i think of things but thats the mistake of a young jam fan i guess...sorry tiger

I had a chance to ask Phish a question on the air once back in the 90s. I asked what impact the Grateful Dead had on them. The replies were:
1 - we huge fans
2 - they didn't get mad when we covered their tunes

From there I really listened to Trey. He is not like Jerry at all. In fact, I don't see any correlation. In fact I don't see much of a musical correlation between the GD and phish besides that the jams ebb and flow.

I see the GD as having multiple musical layers sitting together nicely but phish is multiple musical pieces sitting together nicely.

Also, I don't think I've heard phish cover a dead tune.

Phish did a couple of nice GD covers in the 80s. There are slow versions of Scarlet Begonias and Eyes, back when Jeff Holdsworth was playing with them. Nothing like Dead of course.

Two completly different guitar players, but i think jerry was very influential on trey. Not in the way he sounds but just in inspiration and drive and vision.

Take me for an example, i sound nothing like trey but he was very important for my musical career, and my guitar playing.

phish did Terrapin Station in VA beach on the anniversary of jerrys death day. i think the year was 1998. Its really funny, on the recording that i had when trey starts with the terrapin riff you here a guy in the audience go "Holy FuC5in S&*("

94 sugarbush vermont- having never seen phish, and also winding down my dead career, i really didnt think anyone could come close to the dead, but that night phish ripped it up, and i felt like the torch had been passed. the next day when i got home i quit my job and went right on dead tour just to see jerry a few last times

trey and jerry are both completley mind blowing

i cant help but laugh everytime i listen to phish and i can just imagine trey smiling realy goofy

jerry is the king of beautiful melodies and trey is the king of weird melodies

something being left out of this discussion is Jerry's versatility. The man was a virtuoso banjo player, amazing acoustic player, and was able to mix it up so incredibly well with the electric. Sorry, but while Trey is a great technical player and can certailny blow your mind, he's a one trick pony.

True.

In my view it's still one of the reasons why I think Jerry doesn't get the proper respect he deserves as an overall musician by the masses and the mainstream. Because he was too damn prolific in too many areas to be pinned down. So he gets generalized.

well in addition to multitasking instruments jerry can sing much better. MUCH better.
