oooo here it is boys the question of all questions, i know who i go with (obviously thats why im not posting this in a phish forum) but i just was curious what everyone thought on this one

I can already see this topic getting out of hand. It could quickly lead to some serious bashing from both sides. (fret-wanker, junkie, bad tone, bad voice, ect. ect.) I'm just going to say jerry and not give a reason. I think the majority of people on this site will agree with me. However there are some hardcore trey fans on this site too. And to each his own. This might be better as a simple poll question. Oh well have fun!

if trey had anywhere near the passion and soul that jerry had, they you might could compare them. Damn, i think bobby would even be ahead of trey. When i hear trey play i think its comming from a robot, it just doesnt flow for me. And damn, could he use somemore scales besides the blues scale

Trey is a brilliant guitarist. I have a Phil & Friends concert w/ him on lead guitar (man he cooks!)But I don't dig his voice as much, and besides, no one is Jerry except for Jerry.

beacon theatre, january 2006? if so i was there, amazing show, trey was a total surprise and him and phil made a great team. but even that show is nothing in comparison to some of the dead shows i own. the way i see it, jerry is butter,trey is "i cant beleive its not butter" (but i really can)

Actually I don't think Phish are anything like the Grateful Dead music wise, some of the other stuff outside may be similar but not in terms of the music.

Do you think Phish will actually enjoy the amount of attention the Dead do some fourty-two years after they played their first show? Probably not. I could be wrong now, but I don't so.

Think about this for a minute ... without the roads that Jerry paved half of us would have never heard of Trey .... years ago if you went and saw a band and they didn't sound like their albums everybody thought they sucked ... then Jerry opened up everyones minds to a different approach .... Jerry had more emotion in his playing than anyone that ever lived in my opinion

Jerry loves it more, period. That has to count for something.

Im a Trey fan, and would consider myself more a phishhead than a deadhead, if you held me at gun point. But Jerry and the Dead are the reason for the entire scene.

Kinda like Elvis and Dylan, they are the reason for the season.

Is there really a comparison?

well as a band i'm inclined to like phish better slightly, however jerry>trey. trey is a very technical guy with the guitar and he's a primarily rymthic player, whereas jerry is an intensely melodic player, and of course the melodic player is going to play with more soul and passion. what trey beats jerry in is exploration, phish songs really can completely change shape and form behind his playing, he's able to mutate songs and jams into different emotions intensely easily, but phish as a band has alot to do with that as the grateful dead as a band has alot to do with really predictable setlists. when you see a dead list you already know which songs will be jams and which will be really DEEP jams (dark star). phish keep their setlists surprising most of the time and thats why i like em better.
