Just a warning to all going out to see ole Uncle Bob this summer .... he thinks he is a guitar player now and it is not good ...........

elaborate... is he trying to jam or whats goin on that could possibly be bad about dylan

he thinks he is the lead guitar player ... and quite frankly he is not a good guitarist at all and he is trying to rip on alot of tunes and making ALOT of noise .... he needs to sing his songs and strum his guitar lightly and be the great singer/songwriter he is ... not try to be a guitar hero

Dylan had made some good live recordings, but honestly, everytime I have gone to see him I have been unimpressed. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dylan....on my iPod.

As far as him playing lead......funny story (to me). My sister's boyfriend (a guitar player) complained about the fact that when they went to see him he was playing keys....disappointed that he didn't get to hear him play guitar. I'm like, I could see that if we were talking about Clapton or Santana....but Dylan?

I used to live in the Ft. Lauderdale area in 02-03 couldn't take the lack of good music. At least you have the Langerado festival now.

Bob has never cared what people make nor think of him, do you realy think he could have done all he has in the music industry if he can not play the guitar?

I suppose because he's been on the keys so much he's going back to guitar. I think he's had his moments on guitar but all many years ago, he probably hardly ever plays these days.

Still, he really doesn't seem to give a shit what happens or what people think and only he can get away with it(almost!)

Having seen Bob over 20 times live, I can attest that he's hit or miss. When I first saw him, in the late '70's, he was incredible. I was so excited when he was playing with the boys in the '80's, but thought the first tour with Tom Petty was dismal. Then, he really hit it well with the boys backing him up. When I saw him with his band, he was playing loud annoying versions of his songs, not looking at the audience, generally not caring. Then, in the mid '90's this all changed and he started caring again. He was back to playing rhythm and kicked ass. I saw him perform at the student union on the campus of U of O with about 800 people a couple of days after he played with Paul Simon in front of 60,000. He was genius. Kesey was there, too.
Also saw him at the Gorge with Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell and it was awesome. That being said, a couple of years ago, he couldn't hold the guitar for so long and started playin mostly piano at his live shows. People were disappointed and rightly so. Now, he's back to electric and it's sounding a lot like the disappointing, non-caring shows of the late '80's/early '90's.

Being Bob is tough. He once asked the Dead if he could be part of their band, but Phil said no.

Yes I do .... he is a singer songwriter, and a decent enough acoustic RYTHYM guitar player .... if you don't believe me go soend 50 bucks and see him play ... a couple of posts up somebody mentioned the loud annoying Bob Dylan as well ... think about the beauty of his songs ... loud annoying electric guitar has no place in them ... I wish he would do a solo acoustic tour !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

amyjared's response is spot-on . . . Dylan is no Jerry when it comes to playing lead, but then again Jerry was no Dylan when it came to writing lyrics. Let's also remember that we have all seen Jerry play shows where he just wasn't there - even skimming through deadbase or the taping compendiums will show us that "many" shows from 92-95 were far from roof raising and many featured a less than together Garcia.

That being said, I think the only way I would go to another Dylan show would be if he played a small club in Kansas City - I say this not b/c he is good, bad or somewhere in between, but b/c the smaller the venue, the more intimate the music - I'm holding out for an all acoustic Bob tour and an acoustic Visions of Johanna . . .

i have the bootleg recording of his tour with the band and i have to say i'm not a big fan. dylan can be cool electric (with a good backing band), but i vastly prefer acoustic

You mean Hunter was no Dylan.....right?

I heard that Dylan was showing up at his grandson's Kindergarten class regularly and playing a song or two. That would be awesome, wouldn't it? Of course, I also heard that they just saw him as the crazy old guy with the guitar. Nice!

Nope - keep in mind that Garcia made a stab at the lyrics very early on - as far as "rock" lyrics go, Hunter is right up there with the best . . .
