Just watched the one from the closing of winterland dvd. I never really liked fire that much until now. Could anyone suggest some of their favorites from any other dates?

11-30-80, 6-28-88. I have a love/hate thing with "Fire". I tend to get horribly bored with it usually about halfway through, afterall it only has 2 chords. Having said that, the Dead could usually do more with just 2 chords than most bands could do with 10.

theres alot of good ones out there, right now my fave would have to 10-31-91. it features mr. Bruce Hornsby on a grand piano i beleive and some trippy flute midi from jerry. the jams not the longest but its great and they dont skip a beat, the transition is also pretty much flawless, totally upbeat. Jerrys voice is a little scratchy but sometimes thats when he sounds best! check out the whole show at archive the whole thing smokes, best help>slip>frank of the nineties imo

6-16-85 Greek Theatre Set 2 is not only my personal fav for Scarlet>Fire, but the whole set smokes frome end to end.

They broke out Cryptical and played a very sick Samson and also the Other One and Wharfrat. It isn't a super-well-known show, but I highly reccomend getting it.

It's just a matter of time until someone brings up the epic greatness of 5-8-77 so I'll just do it now and get it over with.

5-8-77 - The magical mysterious Cornell show. I think every tune on that show was one the best.

i just gotta say 5-8-77 is one of the worst shows of that month and the MOST overrated show ever. IMO

Heck 5-7-77 is way better as is 5-9-77 and the southern part of that tour was on FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am with 35FLA somewhat. 5/8/77 is wayy overrated. BUT it does have some good versions. Umm the first and most important is Row Jimmy. Its an amazing version! The Scarlet Fire is my second fav. New Minglewood is nice. The rest is alright. Some people say that M dew is the best. umm YEAH RIGHT. haha certainly not even on my top5 but anyway my favorite Scarlet Fire, even though I havent listened to an extensive number of em, would have to be from Dicks Picks 18 2/5/78. That DP has tons of great stuff besides that too. Awesome TLEO and Music Never Stopped.

2/27/81! By a light-year... such incredible grind and grace. In fact pick almost any 1981 S>F and it's bound to be a Top 20. 10/19/81 Barcelona and 9/12/81 Berkeley round out the triumvirate, but its also hard to overlook the 81 MSG and also the Copenhagen... both of those feature incredibly... impossibly FAT, UNBORING Fires. T'was a powerfully magical year for those, '81. imho of course

Here's a NEW spin on the old question:

When somebody asks you your fave S>F, and that first little audio highlight reel pops into your head... is it from the Scarlet or the Fire part of the equation? Which one is more important to "judging" (kinda icky term to apply to the Grateful Dead experience, eh?) a specific Scarlet>Fire combo?

Tiger nice spin. I would have to say I always think about the moment where Jerry starts to noodle around the opening phrases of Fire. It isn't quite Fire yet, but it is more Fire than the rest of the transition jam.

I think I like the "scarlet" part of the jam better. That's not to diss Fire, it is a great song as well, but it does have a tendency to bore me with its predictability. I find myself digging scarlet more when (on the rare occassion) it is played as a stand alone track/jam with out fire, for example off of Dicks Picks 20, 9/25/76
