For a geometry project in my high school, I've decided to try my hand at making a simple acoustic guitar, kind of like a martin backpacker. My main question is what kind of woods can I use that are cheap and don't sound awful, but if anyone has any basic tips on guitar building also, that's cool too, cause I don't have much experience in instrument making as of now.

for an acoustic try walnut for the sides, easier to bend for a first timer, or better yet rosewood.For a top spruce or cedar.Google guitar building, or try frets.com for info. To bend wood use a pipe closed at one end and place a propane torch pointing into the other (open) end. Mist wood with a spray bottle and let soak in for 5 to 10 min utes and bend using a piece of thin sheetmetal placed over the wood, the other side of the wood directly on the pipe.Dont worry about slight burn marks they will sand out easily.Figured maple is one of the hardest woods to bend due to the grain. Good luck and save up plenty of patience,and have a couple extra sides for mistakes. Peace David
