Caught a great show last night .

It was at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center for the Performing Arts in Vienna VA. 

The show featured the National Symphony Orchestra playing the music of Jerry Garcia with this fascinating band:

Melvin Seals on keys
Jacklyn LeBranch (from the Jerry Garcia Band) on vocals
Tom Hamilton from JRAD on guitar and vocals
Grahame Lesh (Phil’s son) on bass
John Kimock (Steve’s son) on drums
Kanika Moore from Doom Flamingo on vocals.

I was especially surprised by Lesh and Kimock.  I was not expecting such a high level of musicianship from them.  And it warmed my heart to see the next generation of Lesh and Kimock performing together - proof that the children can surpass the parents.

Grew up in Bmore. Wolftrap is such a great venue. Wish the boys or at least JGB would have played there back in the day.

And second the thoughts of the sons performing. Didn’t even know that Kimock’s kid played?

Yeah, he's played with lots of people past 10 years or so, his dad, Voodoo Dead, Mike Gordon, Oteil ...

I get your point, but based on definition, "surpass" was the wrong choice.

Your reply suggests you still don't get it so I'll spell it out:

Lesh and Kimock, in the Dead, had a falling out over Kimock defending staff against harsh words from Lesh's wife resulting in Kimock, after a blowup with Jill Lesh, leaving and, to my knowledge, never playing together again.

That the children have buried the hatchet to again make music together surpasses their fathers in understanding and forgiveness.

I find that beautiful and worthy of notice.
