TopHat/Cripe Build Information

Hey Everyone,
First time poster and a relatively new listener to the Dead and JGB.
I am a guitar gear freak, and a woodworker. The thought of building a guitar has always interested me, and I am on the lookout for a guitar that I can use for everything from classic Jerry tones, to my occasional Alice in Chains phases. My thought is a Super Distortion in the bridge, a super II in the middle, and either another super II or an SDS-1 in the neck would give me a pretty versatile guitar that would scratch all of my tone itches...
Top Hat has always been my favorite of Jerrys guitars. Was this built as a second lightning bolt? Was there anything unique to set it apart from Jerrys other guitars?
Finally, has anyone ever built a top hat replica? Id love more information on the electronics, the "Hippie Sandwich" construction, etc.
