Would it be OK to use telecaster for playing along GD songs?

I have not seen JG or BW using telecasters in their live concerts, hence it might be a bit sounding not right using Telecaster guitar for playing along the songs.

I have been using mainly my stratocasters for practicing and playing along.

If it's OK for Billy Strings to play GD on his Thompson DBA “Frankenstein” dreadnaught, it's OK for you to do the same on your Tele.



Seriously, I think your question probably is more like, "Can I get 'close enough' to Jerry Tone on a Tele?"

It all comes down to how you define "close enough." Close enough to please your audience if you can riff like Jerry? Yes. Close enough for your fellow Deadhead guitarists? For some, yes. For others, no.

My take is depending on your pickups, the middle position could do the trick. Throw a quality graphic equalizer into the mix, e.g., a Boss GE7, to fine tune your sound, my take is yes.

But hey, I'm from the school of thought that with the addition of a 4-way switch to add both pickups in series, we can play literally anything on a Tele.

IIRC, Bobby has a 50’s Tele that belonged to his biological brother. He’s played it on-stage. I’ve used mine for Grateful Dead music at times. Modded with Alembic PUs and electronics and Babicz Full Contact bridge.

Unless you are in a tribute band, you don’t need to match the tone perfectly. Not just for Dead, but for any covers. I actually much prefer covers where the artists are adding their own style and tone.

Jerry changed his tone considerably through the years, so if he didn’t think there was one right tone for Dead songs, we shouldn’t either. Just in pickups…Gibson T-tops or P90’s, vintage Strat, aftermarket Dimarzio singles, Dimarzio humbuckers split or not, even the guitar synth stuff. Jerry used some pretty varied pickups and a Tele could easily fit in the mix. You might dial in the amp a little differently and maybe play it a little different as well, but that’s more interesting than trying to make an exact clone rig.

You may have heard the expression, "Audiences hear with their eyes." I agree with Chocol8's sagacious counsel that, "Unless you are in a tribute band, you don’t need to match the tone [or guitar type!] perfectly."
