damn, what a great player. I'm happy he achieved a very precise Jerry sound without overcomplicating stuff with macs, complicated preamps and stuff

Packy is monster player and well respected in the Chicago area and beyond.

Saying "not complicating" when he has an OBEL, Roland MIDI, and enhanced switching seems odd.

His ability to get great tone is also achieved from his massive knowledge of gear and a life dedicated to playing.

I'd never heard of Packy. Check this out:

midi, obel and switchings are not an integral part of jerry's core sound. What I mean by "core sound" is mostly all about the amp and the difficulty of getting that clean sound enveloped by an electrical crispness. He did it with an affordable modeler and quality IR. On paper it's an even more affordable and accessible rig than rack+poweramp(rack mounted, I'm not even going to bring a mac into the equation) +JBLspeakers

Modeling has been the cheaper and easier way to get close for more than a few years now.

It sounds great recorded or over the PA. Still not quite the same side by side though.

The playing technique is still way more important than the specific gear.

I'd argue that OBEL is VERY integral to the JG sound. Hitting pedals full volume is very critical to the JG sound of effects. And bypassing them completely. And having a buffered signal. All are so very critical.

But when we think of a base tone (clean clear signal, Fender amp, JBL type) you're right., This dude nailed it. His awesome technique was incredible which def helps!!

I think the buffer close to the pickups is important but the OBEL is not at all from a tone perspective. Put a buffer in the guitar, keep the volume pot dimed or bypassed, and put a volume pedal after the effects and you have achieved the same effect without an OBEL and its extra cabling. They did something pretty close except the buffer came after the first cable which is already rolling off some of the highs.

The downside is using a pedal for volume instead of the on guitar control.

I prefer to play wireless … no tripping over chords and it’s been years since I’ve been zapped by a mic. Like described above, I keep my guitar volume on ”10” and place a volume pedal at the end on my effects chain. My pedals always see the same signal. I use a Visual Sound Visual Volume pedal that allows me to quickly return to any particular setting by glancing at the LEDS running up the side.

Im content with my SMS>ART SLA-1 into 2x12 w/ JBL e-120s. I use a furman rack power conditioner as well. With my Wolf or my Bean this nails what i like. I also use a Milkman 100 with a 1x12 cab w/ Jensen for my small travel setup. I mentioned in another thread, try out the JHS Haunting Mids pedal with your Milkman 100. Its like adding a mid control to the Milkman. Now the Milkman REALLY can get that Twin tone.
