I am running a Travis Bean > Sarno preamp JG > JBL D120 > Sennheiser 421 about 1" from the cone.

It is so tinny when recorded that it is unlistenable. Take off the headphones and it is beautiful, sounds nothing like what is on the track.

What am I doing wrong?

Try taking the mic a little more off axis maybe. JBLs can be pretty beamy.

Try using two mics. One close and one room mic. Mix both together for more tonal possibilities.

Double check the connection points of all cables and make sure all setting in the DAW are kosher. Sometimes one little thing in the DAW can throw everything off.
