I've always wanted to do that, but I have been afraid of fucking my guitar up beyond recognition.

I think the Clapton guitar was painted by The Fool, a London artist who did John Lennon's Rolls Royce, and the corner of a building where the Beatles had a clothes shop for a while.
After looking at theose guitars, I'd love to do something to mine...but I'm no Fool.

I think something along the lines of Janis's Porsche would be cool.

Stupid anal detail question, but WTF is up w/ the pic of Jimi's guitar? Why is it strung and facing right handed? Shouldn't it be facing the left? He played righty guitars left handed! Or have I just completely lost my marbles?!

Looks like a right handed person owns it now.

hesgone it IS a right handed guitar which IS correct the way jimi played. he took a right handed guitar and held it backwards. So yes you lost your marbles haha

Jimi played righty guitars strung lefty, not righty-strung guitars, e.g. Albert King or Otis Rush.
This particular one was later owned, re-strung righty, and played by the right-handed Frank Zappa. I believe Dweezil is still trying to sell it- for like a million bucks or so.

Really TS? I was always told and thought that Jimi took a righty guitar exactly as it was and just flipped it in his hands and learned to play the strings upside down.

Really!
He and I share that. Look at any close-up photo of Jimi w/guitar and his heavy strings are on the top. He didn't particularly need a custom lefty strat, because his fingers were so long that he could reach the upper frets from the larger bout, and he became accustomed to having his controls and trem arm at the top of the body.

I think I read somewhere that it wasn't a completely serious auction. I think hendrix gave it to zappa (frank) who then rebuilt it and used it extensively. but I can't recall where I saw this, so who knows...

Back in 1968 four of us (we were in high school) painted our buddy's VW, with flags and eagles and designs and mandalas. We knew about Furthur, so we went for it.
I don't remember much about it, but I do remember that our buddy's dad was not happy and made him sell it the next day.
Art is truly emphemeral.
So here's John Rolls.
