Jerry Tone 1966-1968

Hey guys this is my first post on this forum but I have been reading it and using it for years. Anyway my question is about Jerrys tone in the early days of the dead, I was listening to the San Francisco's Grateful dead album and some live recordings of songs like Viola Lee Blues, Cream Puff War, Good Morning Little School Girl, The Golden Road, and so on. So I was wondering what he did to sound like that its absolutely incredible, I cant believe I've overlooked this point in the deads history. (usually a fan of around 1971-1976) Thank you for listening to my ramblings. If you have any tips or any little bit of knowledge on anything Jerry was doing at this time it would be much appreciated.
