Distortion and the SMS + Carvin DC 200?

Anybody have recommendations to get this rig to sound as good as it can be? All of my dirt pedals sound the exact same through this rig? Should I add in a compressor to simulate power amp saturation? I'm using an OBEL wolf, boutique pedals, mondo power supply, fancy patch cables etc. SMS is set to 1 0'clock, power amp set to whatever is appropriate for the room. Should I turn down the SMS gain and play around with that bit of headroom? Messed around with it for a while and couldn't really make a difference... Analog man Silver TS9 / Option 5 dest overdrive II, they can be almost turned all the way down and still slamming the preamp to bees fuzz. I understand the power amp is playing a big role here, more looking for tips to get this setup optimized! Any tips tricks or thoughts are greatly appreciated. :hail:

What is the gain (on the back panel) set at? Mine is set at about 1 o' clock, and the volume (on the front panel) is set at about 11. Sounds pretty great.
Also, the order of your dirt pedals will make a difference if you are combining them. I have really good luck putting my Earthdrive (can't recommend this pedal enough) last in the chain (volume at 2:30 and gain at 9:30). It's pretty much always on, somewhat simulating amp break-up. Any dirtier pedal I add in will be sweetened up by the Earthdrive.
Works for me - no bees.

I have gone around this block many times with varying results.

Currently I have my SMS rear panel volume at 95%. (I turn it all the way up then slightly back off it.) The volume on the front of the SMS lives between 10 and 11:00. And I would probably run that at about noon if I wasn't also using (barely) an Earth Drive.
I have an MC50 that I run at maybe 85%. Again, I run it to max then back off it a smidgen until the hum abates a bit. But it is WAY up.
Then I do what always seemed unnatural in the past (the past before buffer and obel), I use the guitar volume to determine my overall volume. It usually ends up being about halfway up.

Also, I never monkey with the gain structures until the pre and power amps both have been on for at least a good 20 minutes.
I also make no adjustments until after my hands are also good and warmed up. My hand touch/attack/dynamics etc. impact overall tone so much that I can really mess up the tone (via the gain structures) without being warmed up.

hmmm I'm not as experienced as most on here, but I'd also try lowering the pad knob on the back since it does NOT affect tone... start at zero & slowly move it up while playing. I find with an all analog signal chain (DMBL / Soul Food / Mobius before it & MX200 > H&K CF200 ss amp after) it lives at about noon-thirty, but if using it in FRFR setup (into a cab simulator etc to mixer / studio mons) it lives at about 9 o'clock to prevent overload. In both of these setups the Gain on front is anywhere from 11 - 1 o'clock. Not sure if that'll help but works for me

good luck & have fun!

This is repeat info, but it comes from Brad Sarno. When the rear trimpot on the SMS is cranked, it matches the output of a Twin preamp.

I do as mentioned above. Crank it and back it off a smidge. The ED is a beautiful compliment to the SMS.

wow thanks gang, this is really helpful. I typically use a 69 twin for anything meaningful, but after doing a cross country commute for session work, haul in, load out, drive forever, I just had to do something for my back, that was not fun. So far SMS has sounded pretty great to me. Ive tried every tube or ss preamp pedal on the market, and likely due to my love for 69-70 era twins, sounds better than all of them (pedals that is). anyway, Ill tinker with that rear pot cranked to 95% and see whats up.

another related note: the option destination overdrive 2 could be the best distortion pedal I've ever used, I toured a bunch for about 5 1/2 years, and it came up in a backline rental rig in NYC at random; I've modded TS9's a bunch of different ways, wielded a Klon centaur original for a couple years, played with vintage MXR's, pile of boss types, danelectro, random custom stuffs found used at GC, tried a couple of those new builders pedals (CMAT, drumble, xotic, etc), for some reason O52 has less noise, and more flexibility than any other one. You get low, mid, treble eq pots, along with a very wide range gain / level knobs. It can get so bright it'll shatter glass, or smooth like freshly churned butter. Most recent one I picked up off reverb was about 110 bucks, all hand wired by the builder, this one was an special fundraiser for namm edition. anyway, if anybody wants a compliment to the ED, or just looking to try something new, I really can't recommend that product enough. I bought most all his other pedals at one time or another, and did not really dig them lol. That one is rad though. Hence my concerned thread - when this thing sounded like my TS9 i knew something was up!

a not so distortion related mention: another set of very usable pedals Ive discovered recently: the digitech hardwire series stuff. They are well discontinued now, a grammy winning engineer/producer in told me about them first, and have since seen them on some serious players boards. They are setup similar to a boss pedal, but actually have a silent style true bypass in that old boss type housing. They are all stereo! Caught Kimock using the reverb and I literally ordered one while talking to him lol (he likes this one and the supernatural because they are the same pedal painted in different colors). Its a lexicon pantheon in a box. Sex machine. I also use their Phaser and Tremolo units all wired in stereo into stereo delays (if I'm going non obel). You can get some really subtle or over the top studio quality stuff to happen. They also have a neat rubber gasket to cover knobs if you have a rig set for stage work, or session levels etc. Same deal on the phaser pedals as distortion, tried a shit load, this one nails a couple classic tones without the sticker shock, noise, bypass woes etc. Definitely does the Jerry orange box tone to a T. Tremolo can nail some Bob Weir / Scofield chorus stuff on the high speed rotary settings, can also get close to Black Cat tremolo chop. They all also have tap tempo built in, which I never have used as its all by manipulating the single switch (mini phrase looper style bullshit), but leads me to believe external tap tempo could be modded on if desired.

---- thanks again for the time and thoughts :hail:

awesome cranking the rear pot does help a bunch. I also toggled the power amp to be running only at 60 watts, instead 100 watts per channel. combination of the 60 watts and the rear pot at 95% added what I was looking for. Into a k130 15 jbl with the bright switch set to the middle, its got some cool tones happening for sure. running a hard truckers 8 ohm 2x12 on the second channel just for shits and giggles and similarly, the above changes have really warmed things up. this is all without having warmed up the pre, just flipping everything on, and boom, so to my ears this was my problem.

thanks again gang!
