I caught John K. and his band last week here in Fort Collins. Does anyone know his signal chain? He had two cables coming from his Alembic guitar, had a regular pedalboard, but his amp appeared to be a small four channel mixer into a powered stage monitor on a table behind him. I didn't see anything resembling a preamp, but he did have an iPad on his mic stand. It sounded real good.
