Hi all. I have owned, and loved, the 3Leaf Proton envelope filter for Shakedown, Dancin', Fire on the Mountain sounds etc. I was thinking of just buying it again and being done with it, but I was wonder if any of you all have tried the Keeley Neutrino or any other small form factor envelope filters that you think might be even better than the Proton. Thanks!

I'm interested to see what the consensus is on this too. I'm right on the protron / Trutron fence.

I had the Neutrino for a while .. I really wanted to like it but ended up selling it and going back to my Qtron.. I just couldn't get enough low end growl out of the Neutrino.. And it had a really unpleasant presence in the high end.. The attack and release also seemed off to me.. I think you really can't go wrong with the Qtron, especially for the price..

Vintage early 80's Maxon Af9 nails the tone for me. I use it alone in a OBEL loop, then out from guitar into my regular pedal board, then it goes into a Wampler decibel buffer/clean boost. With the Maxon AF9 > decibel I can nail the dialed in Jerry Tone. Whether using a strat with singles or with my Jerry tribute guitar.

Got mine on Saturday. It's a close second to the tru-tron. Better than the proton, MXR, or autoQ so far. I need to spend more time with it.

Which did I get on Saturday? The Keeley Neutrino.

Never heard the AF9 before gonna check it out on you tube. If what you say is true it would fit better on my pedal board and probably built better than my Mini Q tron.

I really like my old Qtron but, i have been using the source audio soundblox pro poly-mod filter. I can get some good sound in one range of frequency. With a envelope filter i want both up and down sweeps. Has anyone else tried one of these?

That Source Audio Poly-Mod sounds interesting. In the demo's it seems to get in the right ballpark, but one never knows until they lay their own pick to the strings to feel the response and reactiveness. But the vocal, Tron-like character seems to be there, both UP and DOWN.

I'm surprised that we don't see more talk about the EH Enigma or Riddle... Anyone???

I have a Hartman but I really haven't dialed it in. Anyone have sny experience with those?

The MXR is on the board now...but I will be redoing the entire board in a week or two...something may be cooking.

you guys should try the old maxon. I scored mine for 75 bucks. Tried all the ones people are mentioning that "arent dialed in". It does that liquid envelope pretty spot on, mutron in a tiny box they say, and they are right.

I built the Nautilus from Madbean. It is great, but very touchy. Extremely difficult to dial in! It may be builder error, but I have checked it ove a few times? So.....now I built the DOD EF 440 from BYOC, and it is easier to control, but not as good sounding as the Nautilus. It does the job though, and is very close to Jerrys tone with his Mutron. It will do for now.

I had the exact same experience with the Nautilus. I'm ad the parts, so I built a second one to A/B test... Spent a lot of time and was never really happy with either. It will do a lot of things, but if your goal is "Jerry like" EF, there are much quicker routes. Btw - analog man just packaged up a bunch of NOS MXR boards.

The DOD and MXR were never even close for me. Way off. DOD is great for Radiohead weirdness though. I could never make friends with the MXR.

The Ibanez/Maxon was surprisingly close the times I dabbled. I believe that it's also optical like the MuTron. It may be a real contender.


The Emma Discombobulator wasn't bad either. Didn't nail it, but pretty close.
