Picked up this juicy bit of speculation from the PZ, surprised not to see it talked about here

"Last week I had a surprising email show up from a guitarist named Trey Anastasio regarding his gear. As he is preparing for these 3 Fare Thee Well Dead shows, he is also adding and altering some things to his guitar rig to help him get some proper sounds for that context and for certain songs. We arranged a few things for him; got him a pair of speakers to test drive, sourced for him an original/early MXR Phase 100 pedal (Candyman, Crazy Fingers, etc.), sending him a certain reverb unit to try out (can't comment on that), he ordered one of our SMS Black Boxes, and he contracted me to custom build a special version of the classic Distortion+ pedal Jerry used for so long, '76 thru '89. I happen to have a secret stash of some rare components only found in the very early versions of that old distortion pedal just like Jerry's. So while we may have slapped our initials on the box, it really is a tribute to the old classic with just a few of my personal twists."

Reading further down the linked thread there was mention that he had indeed picked up a TruTron.

Very cool.. Sounds like Trey might be chasing "the tone" a little bit.. Its gonna be cool to hear how his new setup turns out. My guess is it's going to be pretty juicy. I'm game for some Dist+ shredding Trey.

Full disclosure: I am aware Trey is not Jerry Garcia, nor is Jerry Garcia playing at FTW.

This the first time I'm aware of that Trey has made a concerted effort to chase Jerry's tone. He's a consummate professional, I expect most of us will be pleased.

Maybe he'll dust off the old SMS JG Classic preamp.

He's apparently got a lot to mess with next month to help hone the rig. I gather that he doesn't want a Jerry rig but instead wants some of the proper effects for certain sounds where called for and maybe a tilt toward a Jerry tone so he fits in the context, but I don't get the impression that he's really going full-bore Jerry rig. I have tried to encourage sticking to much of what is his classic voice, his ingrained comfort zone but with tweaks so that his sound melds well with the band's sound. Jerry and the rest had all carved out their notches where things all fit together. I'm guessing he want's to be sure his sound fits properly. Everything I've provided Trey for this is purely a part of the experiment. In a month or so, maybe we'll know more of what becomes part of the rig.

Fair observation. I could say the same about Kimock who I've heard many times, the last of which was this past Wed. at Gypsy Sally's in DC. What a wonderful guitarist he is who channels plenty of Jerry yet is always his own man with his own phrasings and tone. (As long as I'm mentioning this, I would add, this show was the first time I'd heard him on lap steel. When I tell you he had jaws on the ground and tears in our eyes in his interpretation of Stella on lap steel, I'm not exaggerating. I'll also say that among the several guitars he played, my musician friends and I all preferred the Walker, it was the voice of angels.)

Hi wharfster, could you describe the Dist+ build you are doing? What are the older original components?
I just built a Dist+ with the Wampler mods, and I'm really liking it! I play everyday after work and I'm finding more and more great tones from it. As Brad mentioned the original tone of the guitar is preserved within the distortion.

If Trey just put some JBLs in his speaker cab, or borrowed a speaker Cab with JBLs he would be closer to where he needs to be.
