He is ringing out harmonics on the 12th fret and bending the notes behind the nut with his left hand. Pretty nice Strat tone he's got going on.

yea john mayer actually is a quite skilled blues guitarist as well. he probably just sings mainstream love songs for money, but you gotta hand it to him it worked
