Here is your hot tip of the week…

If you see "The David Rawlings Machine" on a poster at your local small theatre, cancel your plans & go.

I know this is a Grateful Dead Music Forum, but hang in there.

These guys are nouveau folkies, and they're world class musicians & songwriters. Gillian Welsh & David Rawlings that is. They also typically cover a Dead/Jerry tune now and then. For this tour they're teamed up with Willy Watson & Paul Kowert (Old Crow Medicine Show) ….and John Paul Jones.

Yes! The John Paul Jones. Playing mando & fiddle. A guy who choses to play in a venue holding 1500, with royalty of new Americana. The guy who (should his bandmades chose to reconvene) could sell an infinite number of tickets in the next 24 hours.

The opened with GDTRFB followed by Monkey & the Engineer. Also did wide open versions of Queen Jane Approximately, Billy, Cortez The Killer & The Weight. And…Going to California with a mando & guitar jam that was nothing sort of Awesome.
The version I saw was at the Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR. It true jam fashion, the version I saw was even more airy & open than this video.

There is your sideways tip for the month.
Take a chance if you haven't before. You'll thank me later.
Peace
M

Wow! I didn't know about this. I'm a big fan of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. I would not miss this show if I had a chance.

Nah, couldn't be him. He died in 1792.

That guy looks like he could lay down some mando riffs!
But clearly prefers the harpsichord.

You can catch them for free this weekend, 10/04/14 Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA @ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

JPJ usually plays with a bunch of other musicians at this festival. I say him with Seasick Steve two years ago, it was awesome.

Be sure to spend some time with Buddy Miller, T-Bone Burnett and/or Emmylou Harris, as Robert Plant likes to show up and sit in. I wouldn't doubt he shows up and plays with David Rawlings..

My wife & I would've gone directly on David Rawlings tour all the way to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass....but alas ...adulthood intervened.

Sucks.

I saw David Rawlings with Gillian Welch in Canberra a couple of years ago. Just sublime and Rawlings is one of the most tasteful acoustic guitarists/accompanists I've seen. His harmony vocals are mighty too.
