New Speedway

I just love this song but its been an uphill battle to find the groove. I think we did on this version from the last time we played the tune from an outdoor gig in July. I loved where we went with the ending even if it is a bit rough. It was the finale of our 2+ hour set that very hot summer afternoon, playing the lawn in front of Bowen Island's marina. Part of a three day festival to celebrate Bowen Island's past - not that the Dead ever played there, but in the 60's and 70's it was a haven for hippies - go figure!

Peace,

James

I agree James, as simple as this song seems, it's tricky when played with a full band. I've had similar struggles, getting everyone on the same page as far as the groove goes. With that said,it's also a great song to put your own spin on and a little rough or not, I though for the most part your version kicked ass. One thing we all need to frequently be reminded of is that 99.9% of the time, the audience is about 1% as critical of our music as we are...so unless you really just absolutely slaughter a tune, they'll usually dance away and be perfectly happy to be hearing the music they love being played live.

It was cool. I dig your aggressive lead playing man! Killer tone! It always depresses me though, playing this amazing music to uninterested morons. They would have been much happier with Mustang Sally!

This is a funny tune for us. Folks do seem to really dig it. Every time. I saw Furthur do it with Chris Robinson on vocals at Phil's 70th and that's when I went, wow this is a heavy tune. If you haven't heard that version listen to it. Great arrangement. Some cool guitar feedback and great coda.

Thanks all.

Peace,

James
