Does anyone have advice as to premap settings to achieve Trey's tone? I know there is ample info out there as to what his setup consisted of, but am unaware of any analysis of his preference for bass,mid,treble,etc.

I usually use the 68-69 Jerry tone for trey. I could always make it better, but that tones good enough for me.

Groove Tube Trio thru a Mac2300. Sound familiar? On a side note, the Ibanez TS9/808/silver mod from Analogman is probably the best pedal I have ever used. A truly transparent pedal that does not affect the underlying tone of your guitar. Thanks.

I will second that emotion on the Analog Man silver Mod tube screamer. It is my favorite pedal, my next favorite is the Analog Man CompRosser. Paired together, Trey lead tones are easily dialed in. The comp pedal is really a big part of Trey's sound. I think he uses a Ross which the Analog man version is modeled after.

I just picked up a mini-bicomp from Analogman. I use the compROSSor side of it. Coupled with the Ibanez, you're right - it's pretty much there. Analogman said Trey likes the comp after the Ibanez, which didn't sound right to me at first, but after I A/B'd the comp before and after the Ibanez, I agree. Before it, the Ibanez is too mellow - after, just right.

Bay Area, how do you think that MC2300 set up would sound for a rhythm player like me? Also, what is your speaker setup out of that rig?

The MC2300 is very clean. I have it driving a 2x12 open back birch cab w/ JBL e120s. There shouldn't be any problem using it for your type of playing. Let me know if you have any other questions.

RE: rhythm playing with a MC2300, Bobby was running an Alembic F-2B preamp thru one in 1973 and 1974, before later moving on to an even more ridiculously powerful SS amp: the 1000watt G.A.S. Godzilla.

BABB, is the GT>Mac the only amp you own? IMHO Trey is kinda known for a slightly pushed power tubes sound. My favorite period for him was the early 90's, with his smokin Mesa Mk III rig and also his later Groove Tube rig. The Deluxes he's been using sound a little too pushed for my taste in recent (past 8 years!) stuff I have heard.

Yes, the Trio>Mac is currently the only setup I am using. I have 3 cabinets right now: the 2x12 birch open-back I've already described (12 ply actually built in Oregon), a 2x10 hard truckers (picked up from the same place here in the Bay Area as someone else here in this forum (as well as gearheads) did and is now marketing them ...) and I have an old 4x12 vintage Marshall cab that is just sitting in the corner. I'm not too obsessed w/ Trey's sound. I have it close enough w/ my setup and various pedals and vintage Les Paul. I've wandered over to Languedoc's website numerous times, but the price tage is a bit to swallow, especially when I have a Resurrection being delivered next month.

yea i know i want one of those so bad, but $10,000? come on. i can understand it bein handmade and all but........... the guitar i currently jam with is a ibanez fwd60, it looks alot like it and it sounds great. i always thought when i bought it i might have got lucky cuz all the grain is perfect, the harmonics are perfect everything you can think of, for 400$ that thing was very well built

I've always wondered about Trey's pickups. I know that Languedoc built them, but does anyone know any aftermarket brand pickups that come close in specs? Duncan JB or '59? Can't really think of any DiMarzio guesses...

I read on PHISH.net that Paul used Schaller Golden 50's on Trey's guitars. It also said something about Duncan PAF's as well. Here is the link.

Oh yeah... and using a Celestion Vintage 30's instead of a hi-power type like JBL will get you a lot closer to Trey.
