I've been lurking around here for a long time...more frequently in the last couple weeks or so...Its been very warm (pushing 90 degrees one day) here in Anchorage and Ive been driving around with my car windows open blaring the Dead at West High-6/19-20-21/1980..they came to Anchorage and were front page news for about 4 days...Anchorage is sort of like that...K-mart was front page news for 4days too when they opened...I was at the 6/21/80 show...my late wife got some great photos of Jerry Garcia playing Tiger...and one day my son showed me where to find the shows on line
"Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" were the soundtracks of my college years (UW-Madison 73)..I also saw the Dead in Madison 1971 or thereabouts and that show was sort of a first date but involved getting too wasted and dozing a bit at the wrong time although I must not have been too gross because the woman I was with hung with me for a couple more years....west High in Anchorage was the best music venue in town for years..excellent acoustics and comfortable chairs...
I play lead guitar in a 3 piece archetypical middle aged guy cover band...we all have professional level day jobs so its all for enjoyment and not really for art or money... and yeah we do versions of Friend of the Devil and I Know You Rider...I'm basically a cosmic cowboy at heart..my main guitar up until recently was a Clarence White clone "Nashville West" guitar with a string bender...back in March, we lost a string of paying gigs at a cruddy bar because our stuff was too mellow..(and I wasn't even there--I was sick and we used a local A list guy as a fill in--and he's 100x the player I am) Consequently, my band mates have started bring in harder rocking tunes..and I've been using a strat for the last couple of months....
One thing I enjoy here is the wealth of tablature...Im looking for tunes or ideas for tunes, and there are a lot to go through...sat on my porch tonight in the late evening sunshine...getting devoured by mosquitos, strumming my six string working thru "Brokedown Palace"...
I am seriously impressed at the depth of knowledge, and the attention to detail in these forums...Im not one of those guys who will strive to catch every nuance of Jerrys tone and technique....but I sure like how he comps and strings chords together...and takes a wonderful ride...and I think Bob Weir is an amazing rhythm guitar player...and I think that he sometimes played stuff that was attributed to Jerry...occasional I armchair build an Tiger style guitar...even bought a Waldo buffer a few years ago as a starter.....and lately the notion of a strat with alligator cosmetics and tiger wiring, etc. seems sort of within the realm of things possible...
Anyway//im going to slide into the shadows and lurk some more...."as you were" and all that stuff...
