Grateful Dead Music Forum

I'm heading back to the states, and I only have 2 weeks to stock up on music that needs to last me at least 1-2 years. I'm looking for advice on music, and the members of this community seem to have some pretty good taste when it comes to music.

Any advice on some great albums?

Off the top of my head, my 2 favorites at this time are:

String Cheese Incident - Carnival '99 Disc 1
and
Grateful Dead - So Many Roads Disc 3

Both albums are great from start to finish. Of particular interest on these albums are: Eyes of the World on GD, and the jam of "Missin' Me" into "Mauna Bowa" on SCI.

Live at Folsom Prison-Johnny Cash

Willie and Family Live-Willie Nelson

IMHO two absolute must haves. Especially the Willie and Family. Awesome double disc.

JJ Cale - Special Edition

hard to find but very worth the effort---Dave Grisman Acousticity---serious "desert island" status.

Here Are 2 great live sets:

Grateful Dead - Ladies and Gentlemen (4 discs)
This is a collection from the Fillmore East in '71, it contains many of the best jams on the deads greatest stuff.

Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Fillmore
This is the live album that put the allmans on the map. it has great versions and extended jams on some of their rawest material.

my advice:

I always stock up on the Live Phish series, String Cheese on the road series, and Grateful Deads Dicks Picks.

Nothing would be complete on a road trip without Jerry Garcia Band Live: How sweet it is. Great recordings from 1990.

Thanks to all who responded. These look like some choice picks - a lot of music that I would not normally have picked out by myself, but definitely jive with my tastes.

Phreaker (or anyone else) - any suggestions from the SCI "On the road" series? I have 2 of them so far and the first one I bought is fantastic (Austin, TX 2002-04-06), but the second one wasn't very good - only 1 or 2 good tracks on 3 CD's. I'm hesitant to buy more since they are all 3 disc shows and pretty expensive.

I cant stop listening to Winterland 12-31-78. The best Stagger Lee I know of WOW! The band seems in top form and Pig really sets the mood, Jerry's... well Jerry, unexplainable. Truly a piece of art.

Ha! I realized that after I sent it the tape is labeled wrong and I was thinkin about it all day I wish we had tapes with pig on them from '78.

That is one tough question and one that changes considering the mood I'm in. When I'm in a really depressed state The Wall is the greatest album I've ever heard. Yet sometimes I can't get enough of Blood on the Tracks by the big man Bobby D. Then again Working Mans Dead is the greatest album I can listen to when I'm in that Grate mood.
