Been digging ALOT of Bobby & The Midnites and watching videos and Weir looks so freakin' happy playing with all those cats. And Cochran is monster on the guitar!

Bobby is dancing on stage with him, drummer is TASTY, Alfonse is a monster. What the heck happened to all that?!

Cochrane has kind of faded into obscurity since The Midnights - it was a great band all the way around Cobham and Gradney aren't slackers either. I saw them at the Bayou in DC in 85 - good show. Cochrane was a great pop-rock player. Maybe too mainstream for Bobby?

Saw Bobby and the Midnights in the Stanley Theatre, Pittsburgh in Jan 82---no setlist available from what I can find----I couldn't tell you one tune they played either...but I do remember being pretty blown away by Brent and Billy Cobham. I also recall Bob running off stage between songs, behind his amps and putting something up his nostrils. Musta been an 80s thing I guess.....

but regarding the question, my guess is that Bobby started making serious coin with GD around the same time and just bagged it since it didn't make the huge "pop-star money" he may have been after (especially if that video is any indication of what he was going for at the time).....

I can't really think of any solo/side projects Bob did from 85 to 95. I just looked at the RD setlists and it's kinda errie that he put RD together in April of 95, did 3 West Coast shows at the end of April and beginning of May (the second and third of which he billed the band as "Friends of Montezuma"??), then, played 3 shows in August out east with the fourth show being on the day Jerry died. Maybe he knew he wasn't gonna be able to count on the Dead much longer??

tcsned - BC has played with some mainstream cats but he kept coming back to musician focused bands. I'd be curious what he was doing in the mid to late 80s then early 90s.

mttourpro - which Bobby? I heard of them referred to as Ibanez and Cola Twins more than once... Good perspective on the GD "boom". Kinda forgot about that. Being under 40 they've always been popular in my lifetime! Oh, and don't forget: Go Ahead, Kokomo, Weir / Wasserman

I've gotta say, these guys are on FIRE! Surprised nothing more happened. But that could be explained by the turnover of the bassist and drummer.

Yeah, the Bobby's starting to jam as/with the "Ibanez Allstars"

As for other bands, Weir wasn't in Go Ahead or Kokomo but, he was doing some stuff with Wass as Scaring the Children and Bob and Rob in the 80s---it wasn't (seemingly) an effort to make money---I totally forgot about that----also, the point about promoting Ibanez and Tama makes the most sense----I wonder if they did better money-wise with the sponsorships than actual record/ticket sales!

Both the Go Ahead shows I have are with Weir. And maybe not IN but he did do some gigs with Kokomo. Special guest? Bored Bobby? Who knows?! It's interesting how obscure and convoluted the non-Jerry GD club bands were compared to just JGB. Maybe it's just cuz JG took it very seriously and the rest as another creative outlet?

I happened to find this---the very show I saw---when I looked to see who was in the band when I saw them---I guess Bob sat in with them at times as well.

Cochran was also the guitar in the band Weir took on the road to support the Heaven Help the Fool album.
