Just wondering if others here dig Southern Culture on the Skids---a little one-off side project I'm a part of is going to play their whole album "Liquered Up and Laquered Down" in a couple of weeks so I've been immersing myself in and learning the whole album. I was never really a fan even though I saw them once for free.....but, now that I'm really listening to them, I really like their style/sound. Their song writing and arrangements are really cool IMHO.

Very cool! Those guys are old friends. Mary's brother was in the first group of folks I played with in Blacksburg and our female singer is buddies with their drummer. They're a great band should be a fun gig!

Stylistically, SCOTS gravitate towards the rockabilly, surf rock, country music, and R&B genres, with a punk edge and outrageous humor thrown in.

Small world, eh.

Their drummer (Drummer Dave) is very cool---stands up when he plays drums. He seems like a very nice guy and returned our singer's email about a discrepancy in the lyrics to a tune.
He also suggested we put some video of the gig on their FB page too! So I'll have to wear my best straw hat for the occasion.

The entire album we're doing is full of very excellent tunes---every one of them is worth a listen or two. I just hope us Yankees can do em justice....

Yeah, they're all cool folks. I believe Wendy our singer/rhythm guitar player dated Dave briefly when he was at Virginia Tech. It's funny, we're in the Outer Banks playing the Port O'Call now and for years they would either be there the week before or after and there was always a nice note from them taped to the stage. If you record the show I'd love to hear some of it.

If you like SCOTS sense of humor you should check out the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz - stylistically a lot different but a similar lens into the sophisticated culture of trailer parks and beehive hair that puts the "fun" in "fundamentalism" he's also a great piano player and does one of the best Floyd Cramer's out there.

I think the moonshine will get you in the proper mood but I would suggest cutting it with a moonpie and RC Cola to keep you from holding on to the grass to keep from falling off the earth

So we pulled off the whole album---not the greatest but not too bad considering there was no practice for the whole band all together and only one practice with 3 of us.

I used to love SCOTS! I was living in Wilmington, NC and they would come through town and we would go see them. Great band

Ah, the Rev. Billy! Great memories! He used to crack me up! I remember he auditioned for MTV, to be a dj or something. Don't know how they DIDN'T pick him! He could really play and could make a dead person laugh (pun intended!)

Right on!! That was great! I only had a chance to listen to a few tunes but I listened to Corn Rocket, Dance in Mississippi, and Liquored Up but I really liked what I heard. Was that you singing Dance in Mississippi? If so, nice singin' too (the organ solo was badass too). Was this a one-off gig or are you doing more?

amyjared - I agree the Rev. of the First Church of Polyester Worship would have livened up MTV. His video about his midget wrester girlfriend, "Teenie-Weenie-Meanie" got some airplay

tcsned---I don't sing a word on anything---the drummer actually sang Dance in Mississippi and did a darn fair job of it I thought too! (with a hangover that'd kill a horse no less---we were all a bit on the maimed side unfortunately).

theCAUSE is gonna keep doing a couple tunes (Aint Hittin on Nothin and possibly Haw River Stomp and/or King of the Mountain---maybe my personal fav of the CD) but that was a one-off surprise "present" for the host of this big annual party---he's the one who turned us on to SCOTS actually.

Corn Rocket was kinda F'd up at the start with a tempo issue but, overall, that album was a blast to learn and play. Definitely a great time doing it despite all the work involved---those "easy" songs are a bit deceiving you know.

I'm going to see those guys for sure next chance I get.
