saw a local ad for a 2004 black Guild Starfire IV, for $995. Seemed rather cheap for a guitar this nice looking. How are these guitars? Do they stack up well against a 335?

Jer used one in the mid 60's and the older ones can fetch a pretty penny.
Not sure about the new ones, but i did find this thread comparing the IV to 335..kinda helpful
I have a Guild Starfire IV I bought new around 2001 They play like a dream but they are Heavy I am sure mine weighs a good bit more than a Les Paul. The tone is kinda like a 335 but there is not the access to the higher frets. With the weight come a meaty tone however. Hope this helps.
